With all the talk about elite lines/no elite lines, I have not been able to keep up -

do they plan on keeping the express lines at EWR open for some time, or do they plan on eliminating them? I could use them on my next trip (peak travel hours).

They have a FC/WBC/Platinum/Gold security line at the new Midfield terminal in DTW, and they also had one at Chicago ORD last Sunday morning.

Just curious re the line in CLE... is it a completely separate security station, or rather is there a sign that says express line here, and they let you sponge in front of the non-FC/Elites?

I think this is a very important distinction to bring up. While I don't think there is any good argument for there to be no elite/FC lines at all, I think there is a fair argument for why it should be the "sponge" rather than the separate station. Certainly if one allows the overly-simplistic but generally acceptable premise that since security is in the hands of the government, it must be the same for all people, then the separate station MIGHT bring up issues, while the "sponge" definitely does not.

I noticed the other day in the EWR line that the metal detectors seemed to be of a different make in the elite line. Perhaps they were of the same level of functionality, but it seemed problematic that someone might be able to identify differences in a screening device and then select the one that he or she thought easier to slip something by.

At the far left of the screening area there is a sign for FC and Elites. I don't remember the wording.

As early as a couple of weeks ago there was a special sponging line at FLL, however there was no sign and no indication that it existed except for an older gentlemen standing near an empty taped off space wearing a nylon "Continental Connection" jacket and doing absolutely nothing.
When approached with the Elite card out, he promptly moved the tape for us and said "Oh, you're not only Platinum, you're also First Class and belong over here twice."
If you didn't know or guess what he was doing there, you would have missed the special line.
