how does EUA process on 1-stop flights?

What exactly happens on one-stop flights? I am talking about 1-stop, continuing service, same-aircraft flights.

This is not a real world situation, but please play along. IAH/ANC is a 1-stop flight via SEA operated on a 757. Assume there were 12 Silvers and 12 Golds flying from IAH/ANC & there there were 12 Golds and 12 Platinums getting on the flight from SEA/ANC. Also assume that none of the Elite flyers from IAH are getting off in SEA, they are all continuing on to ANC.

Does the EUA get broken down into segments? Do the Gold/Plat. Elite flyers coming out of SEA get a seat in the back of the bus because a Silver got on in IAH? or does the EUA process as if it were a connecting flight?

Just say you clear the EUA when your window opens up, you'll be assigned a single seat all the way through. Yes - you'll still be seating at your assigned seat when you reboard the plane at SEA.
As for the second part of your question, the CO Revenue Management defines the x number of FC seats designated for A and F classes, for pax traveling from IAH to ANC. At the same time, they'll also assigned y number of seats available for A and F classes, for passengers originating from SEA to ANC.
If you take a look at ITN.net, you'll see what I mean.
For example, the number for F bucket (upgradable class) from IAH to ANC, is often times different from the F number for SEA to ANC.
Look at this scenario, say from IAH, A1 F0, and from SEA, A1 F1.
In this case, a Silver from SEA might get upgraded to F, rather than a Gold from IAH just because there is availability in F from SEA to ANC.
Hope this explanation helps....

Prior to EUA there was never a problem upgrading a segment of a 1 stop flight (with or without unscheduled change of aircraft)

Now, I don't know.

No problem at all. Late last year, I was upgraded automatically on a flight from MSY to SAN, via IAH. Same flight number and same aircraft.

i love not "real world" hypothetical upgrade scenarios. i sit up all night dreaming up outlandish upgrade situations in my head. smile. then, when i am close to falling asleep, i start to fantasize about what is going to be in the elite kits. double smile.

EUA operates just like it should on these flights. Don't worry.

Yeah, but essentially I would think there'd have to be F inventory on both segments before EUA would clear at all. You're probably better off having the ticket split into two separate flight segments, you also usually get more miles.

I did this on AA from LGA-MIA-POS (that's Port of Spain, Trinidad). They have a one-stop LGA-POS, but the front of the bus is considered J (business), so you only get 25% bonus miles. By splitting the ticket, I got the First Class bonus (50%) on LGA-MIA, and I got a lot more base miles because MIA is a little bit out of the way geographically.
