Another HoKeY gotcha

Was trying to confirm EWR-AMS/FCO-EWR tonight.

Was quoted an H fare. I asked about K, "sorry the K fares can't be combined with those cities". (of course, the Q fares can.)

Then I'm advised that EWR-AMS is totally sold out in BizFirst. (No J seats either.)

"Can I get a Q or T fare on the outbound since I can't upgrade it?"

"No. The H can't be combined with the Q."

So in order to upgrade the return leg, I have to do the HoKeY on the outbound even though the chances of being upgraded are slim.

#$%@#$@#

Any suggestions on workarounds?

Not sure when the actual flight is, but if it's not in the immediate future, there's usually a reasonable chance of seats opening up as the business folks up front change their plans.

I have never heard of this #$% &*$# .........so I recommend you do this in the exact listed order:

(1) hang up

(2) pour a stiff drink and take a long sip

(3) redial and start over

(4) repeat (1) to (3) until you get satisfaction *OR* check a nicer carrier to/from Europe

Sounds like that could be a nice slogan for CO elites for a while.

I like it! It's catchy. How 'bout NW

But seriously, rocky, what are your dates of travel? I think it's possible you could get an upgradeable fare on NW for about $1000 (or non-upgradable for $380ish.)

My dates are 10NOV for EWR-AMS and 21 for FCO-EWR.

I forgot to have them check a routing through CDG ... if I'm paying for the upgradable, I may as well at get the upgrade. And then I won't be on a 7-5 across the pond.

I just went through the rules of combinability for K fares (as listed in Worldspan) and didn't find a word about it being non-combinable with an H fare on an open jaw.

Fly AA or UA, two airlines that don't give their loyal customers a royal screwing when it comes to international upgrades.

This is getting really annoying. The computers don't seem to be programmed to handle these types of requests. Every time I call, it takes about 20 minutes ... the computer won't price it, they've got to call a supervisor and then the rate desk.

What a ludicrous pain in the butt.
