What Did I Do Wrong

Last week, I flew from IAH to EWR. I am a Plat. elite. I flew an "H" fare ($1012.40 roundtrip) on Flight 40 on the way up on Wednesday and received my upgrade 5 days in advance. But on my way back on Friday, Flight 51, I did not get an upgrade. I have made this flight many times and have never missed an upgrade as it is on a 777-200 with 48 first class seats. How can this have happened? I did not check-in until 10 hours in advance. Could this have effected me getting a battlefield upgrade?

Yes, you probably had a very high sequence number (low on the list of plats wanting to upgrade. Until March 16th the wait list order is based on:

1. Elite status
2. Time of check-in (sequence number)

After March 16th the wait list order will be:

1. Elite status
2. Fare class
3. Time of check-in

BTW, Welcome to FT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks

Lesson learned -- Check-in as soon as possible.

Sorry to say this but it was probably my fault . I got to EWR about 3:00 on Friday and purchased a walk up "D" fare for $50 more ($557.70 vs $507.70) than the coach "H" fare. This has been pretty constant pricing recently. Next time you have to book that trip on such short notice ask how much more the FC fare is. I would rather pay the extra $50 myself than sweat the upgrade on this route. Especially when you are within the gold 3 day EAU window.

Still, as a Plat elite on a H fare, OP should have been first, or next to first, in line for the EUA. Unless that flight was full with international BF connecting passengers, mileage upgraders, and/or D/Z discounted first class purchasers, OP should definitely have been upgraded. Hard to believe there were that few EUAs on a 777 flight. But I guess anything's possible.

According to the gate agent, I was 6th on the list. There were 5 battlefield upgrades. Thus, I missed it by one.

Not surprising as this flight is usually 50%+ elites.

Sorry you missed the upgrade - but I've also missed it as a NW platinum.
