Miles per segment changed!
Just flew from EWR-FLL on Saturday; (I flew this same route in July). In July, the miles for EWR-FLL was 1092, the mileage calculator on the website still says 1092; however, for my Saturday flight it was 1073! I called OPSC and they said that all miles per segments have changed. I then asked were they all reduced and she replied, "I hope not".
She also confirmed if you are within 1000 miles of an elite status they will give it to you.
I said they better update the mileage calculator soon.
So BE AWARE, OLD mileage per segment may have changed since last checked. And you can't trust the mileage calculator yet!
Any other changes in segment miles that anyone else has noticed?

I was on 1092 on Friday, and saw the mileage change as well and went what the ****? Normally the miles would n't matter that much but I'll be 92 miles short of Plat after this week (assuming the other miles didn't change)
I thought I was seeing things, I too could have sworn EWR-FLL was 1092 which was exactly 30 miles more than CLE - FLL.. I wonder if that changed as well.. I'm sure i"ll find out soon

You've been enhanced baby!, now ask 'em if they're gonna drop the fare since they are flying a shorter distance.

While this is a bit shady, it could be argued that they never specified which method they would use to calculate the mileage. There are three or four different ways of calculating the mileage flown on these routes, each of which usually vary by a handful of miles. Most carriers, historically, have used the official DOT mileage between two points, however, when I was doing some research on calculating distances using lat/long coordinates etc, I found many different algorithms that would actually vary by as much as 5%.
So, they could simply be switching to another formula for mileage calculation. (Or they could have just done something else that might be even shadier....they could be measuring from city limit to city limit!)

I've flown EWR-FLL many times and frankly I always found the 1092 miles to be surprising.
For just about every route I've ever flown Continental calculates mileage as the great cricle distance in statute miles, rounded up to the nearest mile.
http://gc.kls2.com/
That web site has an easy to use great circle
route calculator. Just give it 2 airport codes. EWR-PBI comes out to 1023, CO mileage is 1024, EWR-SEA is 2401, EWR-MSP is 1007, you actually get 1008 miles.
FLL is an exception, it's great circle distance is 1064 miles. Thats why the 1092 I'd get was a surprise. BTW: EWR-IAH great circle is 1399, and Continental give 1415 if I remember.
So if you're getting 1073, you'll still getting more than you should.

I did some research and EWR-FLL was 1092 and EWR-MIA was 1086. So I guess the adjustment makes sense.

Actually it was easy as they found a short cut.

Simple! EWR-FLL...1092 miles = 1073 actual air miles + 19 miles on the tarmac at EWR
