Mileage Upgrades Transferable?
Can I upgrade an international NW ticket for my brother, travelling 10/3 to HKG?
I know it is possible to "buy" award tickets for others with your own miles, but does this apply to mileage upgrades as well?

You certainly can do it on CO-- so I would assume you can on NW. It's actually quite easy on a CO ticket, you just call up with the locator and you OP# and pin and they are more than happy to take your miles (assuming, of course proper ticket class and availability.)
I've done it a bunch of times, and as an additional "plus" if the person in question is being waitlisted for the upgrade in question, they "take on" your Elite status for the purposes of clearing the waitlist.
Again, only speaking of my experience on CO.

Certificates that you redeem miles for (free ticket, upgrade, etc) can be issued in any name and can only be used by that person. I find that this is a nice way to give someone a present of a plane ticket and they get to decide where to go without my intervention.

Before you order that nice u/g cert please be aware not all NW, CO, DL etc international coach tickets are upgradeable with mileage certs. One must specifically purchase a coach ticket "allowing" upgrading (read the fine print), usually for more $$$ than the lowest priced ticket available.
