Looking for OAK-EWR upgrade availability experiences
I'm going to be taking the OAK-EWR flight soon with my son. I'm mid-level, but my son has no status. I'm hoping someone here has experience with how easy/difficult upgrades for companions are to come by on this flight. If it usually fills up with elites, no sense me getting to the airport at 5:30 a.m. I'll be traveling on a Thursday.
Any experience with upgrades on the return as well? Traveling on a Tuesday.
Thanks

Although IAH is a completely different part of the country, it shares the hub aspect that EWR has, so I'll let you know about my experience.
I've had 100% success getting upgrades on the first flights of the day (IAH: 9:30am, OAK: 6:30am) between IAH-OAK as a Silver. I've even seen an empty seat in F once or twice. You've got the SFO competition in your favor, so that's a good thing.

I was aupposed to be on OAK-IAH this past weekend and took a bump ($300) and they rerouted us out of San Jose. My wife and I were upgraded from there. You may want to consider this as another option. They may let you X-fer without penalty if the flight is oversold of close to capacity. Just a thought.

Just out of curiosity, does CO have jetways at SJC? I've flown America's Worst into SJC a bunch and always had to use stairs.

I was upgraded both ways for OAK-EWR (I am NW Gold). First was full although coach was virtually empty on EWR-OAK. I think you should have no problem; however, upgrading your son might be an issue. Good luck!

I think only AA and WN have jetways in SJC, and they're in ther other, newer terminal.

Yeah, the new one is pretty nice for a non-hub regional airport. Getting between terminals is a hassle, though.
The older terminal with stairs is able to offer the "true" America West experience.
