Upgrades based on fare

Just got upgraded on TWA, based on the fare I paid (unrestricted coach). The check in agent did that for me without asking...(she was kind of shocked that it didn't happen prior to the check in). As I'm very new to TWA, I was impressed, although I've read about their "First up" program. I've flown a LOT on CO and that hasn't ever happened. Do they have a similar program? I've only been upgraded on CO after haggling, and I hate to do that. Any suggestions? I am traveling a lot of last minute, high fare trips. I live in FLL, and TWA only has trips via STL, vs. CO's more comprehensive schedule from there...

It's a luck-of-the-draw kind of thing...speaking as someone with no status on CO...once I was rushing to the airport after having overslept, got to the counter with my "Y" ticket to get a boarding pass. Had seats assigned in row 22 or whatever. While I was digging for my I.D., the agent mentioned my Y fare, said he was going to put me in first class outbound, and hoped I'd enjoy my trip. Surprised, I thanked him, especially since I was on a 737. (N.B. Of course it wouldn't have happened if I had checked in using the e-ticket machine instead of dealing with a Real Actual Person!) What he didn't mention was that he'd moved me to row 5 (bulkhead) on the return...another nice surprise when I went to take my return flight.

Continental elites on FULL Y fares may upgrade to FC (if seats available). Platinum and Golds at time of purchase. Silvers 2 days in advance.

Continental also offers (or used to offer / will offer) a YONEPASS fare on certain routes. This fare is the same as regular unrestricted coach, but allows a confirmed upgrade at time of booking to First Class. Although this is technically only available to OnePass members, if you're not already a member, just sign up! There's no elite requirement for these fares.

How do I find the YONEPASS fare? Should I check with CO.com or ITN?

Sounds intriguing -- as I've only just begun travelling enough to earn elite status (15,00 so far this year.)

YONEPASS disappeared at the end of 1999, AFAIK. It certainly has been over a year since they've existed.

Is this another reason to...
