Even if you had been gold, and the FC cabin totally empty, they would have had to check the fare basis of her ticket. If the nice old lady had used a reward ticket or a voucher for some of the fare, your gold companion request would not have been honored. CO has stated that they would rather let first class seats go empty than honor that courtesy to you.
