I was just curious if anyone else received a postcard on a offer called The Extra Mile. My wife who flies CO revenue only to Europe once or twice a year and has never had any elite status got this offer:

For a $75 enrollment fee, she would get a fifty percent mileage bonus on any paid fares on CO, CO Express and any codeshare flights. Only fare eligble for Onepass mileage are valid.

Being a platinum, I wonder why I didn't get this offer. It also says that "this offer is valid only for the Onepass member to whom this offer is mailed."

I'm sorely tempted to phone Onepass and see if I can sign up.

It's what's called a targeted promotion, Jaguar. It's not meant for those like you who will fly CO anyway. If you read through the postings that CanadianFlyer referenced, you'll see that you don't qualify.

FWIW, most, if not all airlines do this for their infrequent FF members. I always get bummed when someone gets one of these offers from Southwest. Like you, I don't qualify.

The September, 2000 Inside Flyer has a blurb regarding a new version of The Extra Mile, and makes it sound as though it is open to anyone who wants to pay the $75.

Of course, in typical IF fashion, there's a typo in the discussion of the effective dates.

Does anyone have the real scoop on this?

Would there be any harm in seeking to register yourself for this promotion even though it was mailed to your wife bearing the legend "only for the use of the person to whom it was mailed?" Is the worst thing they can say "No," or would this be viewed as a violation of One Pass rules?

In general, for these targetted promotions, the Onepass computer system indicates whether your account is "flagged" as they put it. If the account is not flagged, then it is my experience that they will not register you for or honor the promotion. They will ask you to mail in the post card, showing your name on it.

However, I too would be curious re what the codes are, etc. I guess there is no harm in trying to call and sign up, just know that it may very well not work.

Last year, I read about one of the Fly More Segment promotions which would reward the member with 8,000 miles (or something like that). I called in to sign up, and the agent told me that I had been signed up for the offer. I noted in my schedule the date/time of the phone call, where the agent said I was signed up. Then, I did fly the appropriate number of segments to get the bonus. However, the bonus did not post.

I called the Onepass service center, and told them I had been signed up for the offer. I even gave them the date/time of the phone call months ago where I had been told I was being signed up. I was told that there was no record of my account being flagged for the promo. Further, I was told that on the date that I marked down as the sign up date, the agent had noted in my account that I was advised that I was not flagged for the promo, and that it would not be offered to me.

I ended up speaking to a supervisor, and asked them among other things why I would mark it in my schedule, if the agent said I was not signed up. I asked them, in any case, what they could do for me. They said absolutely nothing. They reviewed the criteria for that specific Fly More offer, and said that I was not in the target group. E.g. whatever factors they were looking for in the offer, I did not meet them.

I was upset because they indeed told me I was signed up, they did not say I was not allowed to use the offer. I told the supervisor that I would personally call Gordon and Greg, and they said that Gordon and Greg do not get involved in individual situations. The sup said that those two gentlemen refer any customer inquiries back to Onepass sups, just like me. She further said that if it were referred back to a supe, they would have the same finding as she did. She also said that if marketing ever reviewed my account, they would not be inclined to give me the offer, since I flew on a lot of T and Q tickets.

I decided it was not worth going any further with it at that point, and anyway, at that time I was actually flagged for a different but similar Fly More offer.

I do agree that Plats should be getting more of these promotions. Perhaps we should all pick a date, and then start an organized email and letter campaign to CO. Like all of us, say 100 people, all email and Fedex a letter to CO asking for a few things. We might use the suggestion threads for additions to the program, etc. But this might be one of the requests, among others like intl upgrades, waived change fees, automatic upgraded avoiding the midnight calls, etc.

As someone who generally flies on the cheapest fares, this attitude by the airlines (not just CO) really rankles me. They take an attitude that if you're flying on a discount ticket, you're a third rate pax who deserves only minimal consideration. True, they are making a lot more money on the business flyer who is buying Y tickets most of the time. And I also realize that discount fare might even be below their cost.

But one thing they seem to overlook is that they're not selling me a cheap ticket out of the goodness of their hearts. They're doing it because they can't sell it for any more. And if they don't sell it to me at that price, they won't sell it at all. And, without us, they'd be flying with a lot of empty seats, and quickly notice it in their bottom line.

I called the OPSC today. The Extra Mile is $75 if your account has been flagged, but it it open to anyone willing to spend $99. That works out to less than $.01 per mile if you accumulate 10,000 miles.

I paid the $99.

Now anyone can now enroll in The Extra Mile program for $99 online at the CO web site. And, if you enroll online, you'll get an extra 1,000 miles!

However, there is one caveat:
"With The Extra Mile, you can earn a maximum of 10,000 OnePass bonus miles during the promotional period."

Well, based on 2 cents a mile, 10,000 miles is worth $200, so it's still a good deal. But the mileage limitation does take some of the luster off.

I'd completely forgotten about this post and promo. My wife ends up on free tickets the majority of the time anyway.

It somewhat rankles me that Plats don't get all of the offers, but informative gatherings such as this prove invaluable.

Regarding the comments made to jettsetter, I would not put up with such insolence. If I could stand such attitude, I would fly Delta or United, not my favorite airline.

That's an attitude shared by all the airlines. Once, I had an upgraded flight with CO. Went to check in...cancelled flight due to mechanical probs. They put me on an Attitude Airlines flight. When she booked me in Coach, I questioned it and asked if she could book me in First, same as with CO. She responded, "Not at that fare!!!" And the FC section on that flight flew 1/2 empty. And I've never flown AA again!!!
