Here's a good link to the basics of fare rules and a glossary of terms:

I'm wondering if Point Beyond Ticketing is when you purchase two tickets to take advantage of fares in better markets but actually fly all the segments. Let's say the fare from ATL to LAX is $700, but I discover the fare from ATL to DFW is $250 and from DFW to LAX is $200, so I book two tickets, one RT from ATL to DFW and another from DFW to LAX. I'm not throwing away segments, but does this represent fraud?

Carl: No, that is not fraud. Perfectly legal. Just creative ticketing.

I've done that many times.
Never had a problem.

What you refer to is called "End-on-end" (thanks for the link, Essxjay!). I used to call it nesting.
According to the site mentioned above, it's legit.
I'm currently plotting the best end-on-end for an upcoming trip, as a matter of fact.

In the Northeast, if you can get any bargain
RT to Washington, you generally can find a real low cost deal to where you want to go from one of the three airports down there. Then you put that trip inside your access to Washington trip.
