Geography lesson
In our passion to express our displeasure over Continental's (among others) upgrade policies, a few of us have been bandying terms about carelessly. Everyone please get out your spiral notebook and sharpened #2 pencil, and copy down the following:
United States = All 50 states
Continental United States = 49 states (i.e. not Hawaii)
Contiguous United States = 48 Contiguous States = All states that border at least one other state (i.e. not Alaska & Hawaii)
Empire State = New York
Nutmeg State = Connecticut
Solid State = New Jersey (because the transistor was invented there)

Alaska doesn't border the 51st state, it borders Canada, which isn't a state but rather a wholely owned Subsidiary.
My dear friend RichG:
According to the US government, the continental US does not include Alaska.
The Dept of Defense and the GSA list travel and deployments to Alaska and Hawaii as OCONUS(Outside CONtinental US) as opposed to the first 48 states as CONUS(CONtinental US).

So? When a high government official announced that ketchup was a vegetable, did that make it true?
{careful who you call dear... certain other FlyerTalkers might think you were being sarcastic!)
