How about an altered route?

I'm sure this has been discussed before, but I can't find it. I'm booked on an afternoon EWR-LAX flight next week, but may want to leave earlier. Am I limited to the other non-stops, or will they let me connect through IAH? Availability looks quite a bit better on the flights via IAH.

When I've tried the "change flights" button it's offered both nonstop and connecting flights.
