PLATINUM CREDENTIALS ARRIVE
I received my new Platinum Card this past weekend along with a new luggage tag and Priority Baggage Handling tags. Also, included were 4 NW companion upgrade certificates and 2 certificates of "Continental Currency". Companion upgrades are good only in48 contiguous states, Alaska, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean.

Jaws: They gave me 8 NW certificates.
But I doubt I would use any of them; eagles fly alone!!!

Is it me or do I see very low price for the NW certificates on the black market?

Here I go again... trying to think logical!
Wouldn't it make more sense for CO to give your top elite flyers *CONTINENTAL* upgrade certificates and not NW ones?
That way for example JAWS can fly in comfort when he comes up to share a steak and a Sam Adams with his best buddy the CAT in JERZEE!
OR maybe if you are Platnium you already get upgrades. I DON"T KNOW THE PROGRAM JAWS BUT if you are a CO member shouldn't you get CO benefits????
Again, I'm trying some logic here. CATMAN

These are NW certificates for unrestricted fare upgrades. These are the certificates CO did away with for themselves, but obvoiusly not for NW.

These are companion upgrades. CO has unlimited paperless upgrades for platinums(on CO, NW and HP).

Thanks for clarifying guys. I don't know when I'll make elite on CO but it's good to know a new rule everyday.
Again, Personally, why can't they go with electronic upgrades???

Cat...I'm sure that the biggest issue is the integration between CO's and NW's databases. It seems that the only reason that the companion upgrade is in hardcopy form for CO OnePass members is the short time that both airlines had in implementing their alliances.

Is there any way to get companion upgrades if you are only Silver Elite? Just wondering...

milesandpoints: e-mail me your address and I'll send you a couple of the companion upgrades. The certificates don't have a name on them, but in the fine print (very small) on the back they refer to calling the platinum line, but I would try to use them if you are standing by for upgrades. You never know what will happen, I don't expect to use them, and I love to play games with the system.

Oldgold: The terms of the certificates state clearly "This certificate is transferable only to a companion traveling with the platinukm elite member. Photo identification must be presented at time of ticket issuance and at time of check-in"
So they are only good for people traveling with a platinum member.

Jaws: I'm still waiting for my new Platinum card from CO (my best guess is mid-April).
But this morning I did get a lovely letter from CO advising that they were introducing a "new Platinum level next year" (1999) and if I "flew 75,000 qualifying miles by 31st December 1998," I would qualify.
It is nice to see that CO's communications to European members are as timely as ever.

Boomer: My certificates have written in red print on the front: "VOID IF SOLD, BARTERED OR EXCHANGED FOR COMPENSATION" so I don't have any problem with giving them away. Also I think that it is not the passengers responsability to be aware of all the details in the fine print on the back, and it has been my experience that ticket agents don't worry a lot about it either. My advice is try it , what have you got to loose?

Oldgold: I understand you point. I posted the details because I dont want someone to get one as a gift and then be disappointed when they couldnt use them. There is always the chance that the gate agent would let a non platinum slip through, but it is be no means a sure thing.
