E-Ticket Upgrades?

I have started using E-Tickets almost exclusively and have yet to get an upgrade through the E-Ticket machine. So, I take my E-Ticket and go to the 1st class/Elite counter and ask if they can improve my seat.
About 7 out of 10 times I have been upgraded by the agent after the E-Ticket machine said nothing was available. Also, I have never received, from the machine, the seat I selected when I made the reservation.

Jaws43... I have booked four seats using CO's
E-Ticket machine and 3 of the 4 were in different places than my original booking!
(One was all the way int he back of the Plane.) While I am not elite the nice lady
at the gate was able to change my seat to
somethign a little closer and on the aisle
(which I need with these long legs and knees
that sometimes stiffen up.)

It's nice the e-tix machines work fast but
I feel like I'm carrying a grocery receipt
and not a real ticket. Here's my issue:
Dont' that have to check for i-D while boarding. One flight they did NOT though I
flashed my i-d! CATMAN

Same song, another verse! Yesterday, I went to the ETM at IAH and inserted my Gold Elite card and voila!, out comes the ticket with 24E on it. At IAH there is a person with a terminal next to the ETM and I made a comment to him that I never get a reasonable seat or an upgrade from the ETM's. He was defensive about the comment and called up the seating chart for my flight and there was 2 1st class seats available. He couldn't believe it! He upgraded me on the spot. So,
from now on I refuse to visit the ETM and just go to the !st class counter and have them get my E-Ticket boarding pass. Artificial Intelligence just is not there for
the ETM's.

Now I need to become elite on Continental!!!

But to do a test, I'm going to try out the e-ticket machine for United when I fly to
Maui later this month and will update you
guys on my experiences with my seat. (I'm
supposed to be already upgraded, but if CO's
doesn't work for Jaws43... the machine would
probably put me in 40A, next to a big man
who snores and in front of two children who
spent the whole trip fighting and crying.

I LOVE CHILDREN but not on the business trips
when I'm supposed to be using my plane time
to work or to sleep (and not snore!) CATMAN

Well, I did it again today. I was running late and used the ETM on the way to the gate.
In anticipation, I waited patiently and out
comes 24E again. Now, I'm paranoid that CO is reading these threads and have assigned me
a permanent seat. Two days, two flights and one seat. What are the Vegas odds on that.
Since I was running late, I did not get upgraded at the gate, but did get 5A on the
bulkhead.

Well, I've had similar experiences in the past as well. However, mine has a little twist to it. Today's a good example. I used the E-ticket machine and was not upgraded (I am gold elite). The worst part was, the E-ticket machine did not even have my OnePass number! This is probably the reason why I wasn't upgraded. So, I go to the gate agent and asked her to print out a boarding pass. My OnePass number was printed on the boarding pass. Then when she checked the F inventory, F was available so I was upgraded. Not sure what the glitch was. I have not changed any part of my itinerary at all. Oh well-- I guess there are still glitches with those e-ticket machines.
