largest plane allowable into CLE?

I apologize in advance if this is posted in the wrong forum.

I was wondering, now that the new runway is open in CLE, what are the largest planes that they can handle now? This morning, driving into work, I almost swear I saw a grey 747 coming in for landing. I am at least pretty sure it had 4 engines. I'm assuming this is due to the VP debate tomorrow night, but it just made me wonder.

Don't forget to watch said debate tomorrow night, it's being held at my school! I'll have inside pics (Case contractor) if anyone is really interested...

largest plane ?

Wouldn't that be a 737 for CO? We have some large planes here at InterCONTINENTAL, I know I've seen 747s, 777s, as well as the widebody Airbus. But we have very few planes from airlines other that CO ....

Perhpas you have more of a choice at CIA, er CLE

The 9,000' runway can certainly handle a 747, however a fully loaded 747 would require a little more runway to take off. For example, a 747-200 fueled to go CLE-NRT would require 11,500 to meet minimum requirements.

rxn20 -- I believe the plane you saw this morning was a C-17. It did the "downtown" approach (flying east to west parrallel to the lakefront). It probably contained equipment for the Cheney and Edwards security units.

We get all sizes of planes through Cleveland, including 747s, 777s, and the Antonov cargo planes. Unfortunately, as noted above, our runways are still a bit short for some long range flights.

As for current schedule (non special event or diversion) service, I believe the current largest passenger plane is the 757. For a while United was dropping 767s and DC-10s in here on a regular basis so they could clear the tarmac at ORD, but I think that has ended.

There has been some talk about seasonal weekly 767 service to HNL, which I think would be great considering all of the east coast and midwest feeder flights through CLE. AMS and CDG has also been discussed, but if anything those will be the 757 as well.

Didn't CO used to run 767's or 777 to LGW a while back? I seem to recall they did.

The CLE-LGW flight has been on a 752 since the inception of the service several years ago.

Beechcraft? Do those things still exist in the Continental fleet?

No, No - Continental has an all jet fleet. Continental Connection, however, flies the turboprops out of the hubs. Not something that I would love to take, but it helps Continental offer service to smaller regional communities that can not support ERJ service.

This would be awsome - if it comes to play... I am in the process of booking CLE-HNL now and would love to get on that flight.

MBM3 - what are you basing this on? Any other info you can share?

Steve

I asked a COEX FA the other day "Do you know what a CLE jumbojet is?" She correctly guessed a 737 and laughed for the rest of the flight about it
