Changes Coming to Randall's OnePass Program

If you shop at Randall's in Houston, this would be of interest.

Randall's is changing the structure of it's Remarkable / OnePass shopping program. Currently, shoppers earn 1 CO mile / $2 after purchasing $500 during a half-year period (Jan - June or July - Dec). If total purchases < $500, no miles are credited. When purchases reach the $500 threshold, then you get the base of 250 miles + 1 CO mile / $2 for every purchase after that, regardless of the amount, for the remainder of the half-year period. I've sometimes received transactions for 1 (yes, one) mile after stopping for milk.

The change effective July 1 is that shoppers will receive miles only in blocks of 125. Whenever total purchases for the half year period reach $250, then 125 miles are credited. Then, the next $250 gets 125 miles. No more credits for small amounts of miles, however it takes only $250 in purchases during the half-year period to get something.

FYI: Purchases of gift cards do not earn miles, however purchases using gift cards do earn miles.

BTW, the same change will apply to Tom Thumb and it's AAdvantage program in DFW area.

Eh. Not worth it. I'll stick with HEB.

I wish one of the chains here would offer UA or AA miles so I can 'diversify' a bit more.

MEMORANDUM

FROM: Mark Bergsrud, SVP Marketing

TO: OnePass Service Center

SUBJECT: Partner Changes: Randall's Grocery

Please be informed that effective July 1, 2004 we will be revising the OnePass mileage accrual terms with our Texas grocery partner, Randall's. We believe this new program will help both Randall's and Continental boost revenue, as we will be rewarding customers who purchase high margin items. Additionally, the level of simplicity with the prior Randall's partnership was inappropriate given the new OnePass program, that we believe additional layers of complexity will properly align Randall's with what OnePass stands for today.

Effective July 1, shoppers will no longer be able to earn mileage at Randall's based on their order's total. Instead, a new tiered system will govern how many miles are earned.

- Regular Price Items: 1 mile per dollar spent
- Gourmet items, prepared foods*, and premium deli meats**: 2 miles per dollar spent
- Sale Items***: 0.5 miles per dollar spent
- Super Special (TM), Buy One Get One Free Items, or any item featured on Pages 1 or 8 of Randall's circular: 0.25 miles per dollar spent
- Tobacco, Alcohol****, Dairy Products, or other items regulated by law: 0 miles

* excludes cole slaw, macaroni salad, and other low-margin deli items as determined by Randall's
** refers to sliced service counter deli meat items exceeding $6.99 per lb (except peppered turkey)
*** refers to sale items that are discounted no more than 27% from full ticket (22% in South Houston)
**** excludes Scotch. All varieties of Scotch earn 1 mile per dollar, except DeWar's Scotch which earns 6 miles per dollar, unless on sale, in which DeWar's will earn 3.7 miles per dollar, unless more than six (6) bottles are purchased (in the same transaction), then DeWar's will earn 12 miles per dollar (regular price), or 7.4 miles per dollar (on sale). Online purchases of Dewar's Scotch at randalls.com for store pickup will earn the higher mileage rate, regardless of quantity purchased.

Further, miles will only be transferred to Continental in 125-mile increments (100-mile increments for Silver and Gold Elite members, and 68-mile increments for Platinum Elite members)^.

^ Does not apply to CO Star members. CO Star members will continue to have their mileage transferred monthly.

We believe these changes will not only enhance the Randall's experience for our loyal, Texas shoppers, but also generate business by encouraging them to fly Continental.

Work Hard. Fly Right.

Wow! A change I'm actually really happy about! As a single person who spreads his shopping between Randall's, Whole Foods, and HEB, it was always difficult to hit $500 at Randall's in a six month period. I think $250 is much easier to get to. It will hurt those who were spending over $500 but less than $750 in six months becasue they will no longer get the smaller mile postings but overall I see this as an improvement. Anyway, the grocery miles are a nice little bonus but I don't think anyone really sees those miles as a means of accruing huge amounts of miles.

Very clever. Scary that you put so much effort into it, but still funny.

Save the money by NOT shopping randall's and with that savings buy a ticket on a carrier that gives 100% EQM on EVERY fare. With the prices at Randall's it shouldn't take too long to save enough to get a plane ticket.
