Regional upgrade with one segment waitlisted

I have a flight from TPA-IAH-SFO in about 2 months, and I've used a regional upgrade (actually a CR1 brought over from United).

The first segment cleared immediately, the second is waitlisted.

My question is: Do I have anything to gain from "babysitting" the segment, checking every day on expertflyer to see if an upgrade seat is made available, and if so, calling in to CO? Or will they automatically bring me off the waitlist if a seat shows up?

I've matched status from UA 1K to CO Plat if that matters.

Also heard that up until 24 hours before flight, if my second segment DOESN'T clear by then, I have the option of "unapplying" my CR1 to the whole itinerary and keeping it. Correct?

I'd babysit - YMMV, but I've had to call in on 5 CO itins in a row when I saw R space open up and I stayed waitlisted with an UG instrument, in order to manually force the UG. Back-end systems just not so hot.

Set an alert on EF to notify you when a seat opens.

Any other way to check R inventory for people without EF subscription? Short of calling in everyday?

Thanks! I didn't realize all it takes is a click on the "fare class" link. BTW, how accurate is that? Would the phone agent tell me there is no R inventory even when the website says there is?

Great to hear! I am a 1K with UA and Plat with CO, and am using a regional upgrade on CO. I have my UA number in the profile, since it is higher for the return portion operated on UA metal, but Im worried that other CO Plats will get cleared above me (listed as a UA 1K) since I cant put both airline numbers into this mixed itinerary. Suggestions?

Call the CO Elite desk. They can put the CO number on the CO flight and keep the UA number on the UA flight. You can't do this online.
