Split "direct" flights

I recently booked a trip which had me going from AAA-CCC with a stopover and change of plane at BBB. The flight is shown on my itinerary as a "direct" flight. Can I get the segments split so that each leg shows as individuals, does it require the ticket to be rebooked? I've also read the benefits are each leg clears on its own instead of needing to have all legs in AAA-CCC to clear.

What negative effects are there if I keep it as a "direct" flight?
Thanks.

As you noted, inability to clear upgrades as easily. Some others used to report
issues with seating.

Also:

Loss of EQMs for the routing. (Credit for AAA-CCC only)

It should not require the ticket to be rebooked for you to get the segments split. Call the res line and explain that you want to split the segments to increase your upgrade chances. They should take care of it for you. If they cannot (or will not) just hang up and call back.

Sometimes the fees will go up because of the routing change. I once HAD to pay $1.25 !! (they offered to "fix" this, but I said naw, go ahead and let me pay and save you the trouble. They laughed, thanked me, and I had both of my (separate) upgrades about an hour later).

I have had friends on the same flights, and I was always upgraded sooner by having the separate segments. In one case a friend was not upgraded on either segment, while I was upgraded on both. He had the same status as me. So, always have a separate PNR for each passenger AND separate segments if you are trying to upgrade. I don't know of any material disadvantages to doing this.

It's a little more trouble to get bag fees waived for companions after splitting the PNR, and moving friends after PNR splitting is harder (they will be charged if you move into an ELR seat, even if they are in one now).

They told me that this is not possible anymore (to split the segments). Is this true?

United now credits AAA-BBB-CCC on "direct" flights (even partner ones), so no issues if credited to MP.

I've called 5 or 6 times for my parents and was turned away each time, so it may take a lot.
