If you think there is any chance that you would earn 200K this year, it may be wise NOT to combine them... Fly 100K credited to CO and get 6 CO SWU's, fly the other 100K credited to UA and get 6 UA SWU's. If you combine them, you would be losing (2) SWUs, as 200K on one carrier alone this year would net only a total of 10, and not 12.

But if I have no plans to hit 75k this year (more like 50k), then I guess I'll ask the 2nd part of my question: does it even matter picking one over the other?

That was precisely my earlier point.... that you would have to fly 10K BIS miles on UA metal in order to qualify for UA CR1s... Read down several posts... others have been told (by MP CS) that is NOT the case...
The ps flights are really only a JFK-LAX/SFO so if not vased in any of those 3 cities or being able to fly into 1 of them , I think a person wouldnt go way out of their just to fly UAs ps. If flying on CO Intl then its out as they would have to get between JFK & EWR on their own dime so there will be more competition for the UPgrades but nothing I think to lose sleep over |
1Ks... might want to post CO flights to MP
If you acquired 1k status... one way or the other... you are entitled to 2 CR-1s for every 10,000 BIS (CO and UA flights only), with a max of 2 CR1-s per quarter.
So you want to cross a 10K mark on you UA account within every quarter, in order not to forfeit the CR-1s. (E.g. post 18k the first quarter and 3k the next quarter will early you 2+2 CR-1s.... whereas 3k the first quarter and 18k the second quarter only yields 0+2 CR-1s). So even if you fly mostly on CO... it might be worth to post miles to you 1k MP account. The drawback is that you as 1k is below Plats on CO metal. |

If you did 15/10 versus 20/5 you'd get more CR1s the first way. |

I'm pretty sure that 18/3 would credit the same as 3/18; you'd only get two total.
If you did 15/10 versus 20/5 you'd get more CR1s the first way. In practice, the counter only resets on Jan 1, so a member must only fly the 10,000th mile (rather than all 10,000 miles) during the quarter in order to receive that quarter's CR-1s. (Example: A member flies 15,000 miles in January and receives 2 CR-1s for Q1. If the member flies only 5,000 miles in April, s/he will still receive 2 CR-1s for Q2 since the 10,000th mile was flown during Q2.) |
There are no more quarterly roll-overs for CR-1 earning - you actually have to fly the 10K BIS now, not just cross a 10K threshold.

1K voice is saying that we won't be getting the quarterly SWUs because we acquired our status in 2011. I'm going back and forth with them now. We'll see, but I'm not very optimistic. I pointed out that I picked UA as my upgrade instrument account because someone from MP CS TOLD me that we would be getting the quarterly SWUs, otherwise I would have picked CO.

The website now reads: "For 2011 1K members (earned as of January 1)"... I presume January 1, 2011. But one could argue that we did earn 1k status based on our 2010 earnings. Clearly there is some variation in the information we get from UA about this. The email I got from UA today read: Unfortunately, the ability to earn Regional upgrades is based upon your flights flown on United and Continental only when those flights were originally posted to your Mileage Plus accounts. While the ability to have your Continental status recognized in the Mileage Plus program has occurred, the rules regarding earning of Regional upgrades has not yet changed. This policy will not enable you to earn Regional upgrades unless you accrue the required EQM's for your United and Continental travel in your Mileage Plus account. |
All valid points that I made to the person who was emailing me. The latest response I got was that this was being escalated to the person's supervisor and I would hear back soon. We'll see...

Thanks for the info. When do they post to your account? Is it still the following month? I think I read the tenth the following month somewhere.

Hello Mr. njcommodore, Thank you for your email. Members who match to 1K in our program based on Continental status will not be eligible for the quarterly Regional upgrades. They will be eligible to earn Regional upgrades after 75,000 Elite Qualifying miles and for every 25,000 Elite Qualifying miles after during 2011. If you want to change your decision and make Continental your primary carrier, please let us know right away as it has to be reversed by tomorrow. It is my pleasure assisting you, Melissa ----- I'm thinking I'll switch back to CO, since that's where 99% of my flying is. Thoughts? |
a merging accounts for dummies question
Here's a newbie question: I am CO Gold and have flown CO almost exclusively for 28 years. When I fly other *A airlines, I point the miles to CO.
I have avoided United completely up to now because of its reputation. I did open a United account, but so far have not flown United. I can find CO flights that fit my schedule. Hence, I'm thinking there is no reason for me to merge accounts. I will just continue to point miles to CO until the merger folks merge the accounts. Make sense? |
