Z-Class codeshare with ANA
I am booked on a Z-class ticket NRT-IAD on 11/15, ANA metal. I would rather fly on 11/14 and if I look on the ANA website I can see there are seats available. But both Continental and ANA are telling me there is no chance of the waitlist clearing. Any advice on how to resolve this would be gratefully received.

My only advise would be to keep calling CO until you get an agent that will get you the result you seek. This may take numerous call to CO agents. Don't give up...good luck.

What waitlist would you need to clear?
Booked on NH metal and a non-flexible ticket, I'm not sure why you think you should get a change just because you want one. Pay the change fee and get the date you want or fly what you bought. Badgering employees to break the rules is bad form IMO.

I did not understand this waitlist part the OP had written as well. Perhaps they were asking about free standby for earlier day flight? This will be unlikely with a restricted fare.

Also... even though a seat looks available on a seat map, it doesn't mean that it hasn't been sold. It is simply unassigned.

Not sure how the 1K line would treat it. I've called the 1K line and they've helped me out when flying an AC flight booked through some UA/*A contract my employer has, luckily my flight had a UA codeshare flight number.
Sometimes they can't do anything though.
I know NRT-IAD on ANA has a UA flight number, you could try them. I've also tried with other flights and had no luck and my employer's travel office had to deal with it. SQ is one where the airline though is much more helpful than the 1K line.
Try it, it may work, it may not. Best of luck.

Fair enough, but in this scenario the case seems pretty clear. Z is a discount Biz class ticket so there is going to be a change fee involved. Trying to go a day early on a whim without paying for said privilege isn't likely to work out so well.
