Split PNR after checkin?

Hey, I have a big trip tomorrow where I'm traveling with 4 other people in the same reservation. I didn't split it off for upgrade purposes because I wanted to sit with them on the way there (IAH-SAP), but for the return trip I just decided today I would be ok with sitting up front (if I get the upgrade). (I should have just split it earlier, but now I'm hesitant to do so).

We're in the 24-hour window, though technically I don't think we've checked in even though I tried (because of having to show passports).

So:
  • Could I do a split after we check in at the customer service desk?
  • Would it mess up their baggage/elite benefits?
  • Does the PNR change after the split?
  • Would it mess up their tickets in general?

Thanks for answering!

Officially it won't mess anything up. In reality, well, anything goes.

If you get gruff from the agents re baggage the line you need to reference in SONIC is GG BAG 2ND

I did sort of the the same thing (IAH/PVR). Did not check in until the airport, prompted for UG @ the kiosk selected yes but did not get it (no room up front). The kiosk split the reservation and all well well. Received upgrade for the return and brought the family up front via miles. Pretty seamless all in all.

Thanks, that's what ended up happening to me. Good to know that works so I can get the upgrade on the way back.

I was helping my sisters and my nephew check in. One sister is silver and the other two are platinum and all three are on one reservation. At online checkin, I was checking them all in. I got the "not a boarding pass" problem for the silver and my platinum nephew, but my platinum sister got boarding passes. Odd thing was that after that, all three were on separate reservations.
