Cutting to the chase, if you're not looking to go into NYC, then, as one of the threads above suggests, you'd want to get some Spanish or Portuguese food in Newark. Newark is not really knows for its Italian food, but the Ironbound neighborhood has some of the best Portuguese food in the country and is only about 10 minutes from the airport.
Suggestions for good restaurants are:
- Casa Vasca
- Spanish Tavern
- Fernandes - if you want good Brazillian-style Rodizio at a good price (often overlooked)
If you do want close, excellent Italian, I suggest Spirito's in Elizabeth. It is about 4 miles from the airport and has been in business since the 1930s. My grandmother used to go there when she was young and I still make the trip there today. It's fantastic.
You can look any of these places up on Yelp, Google, etc.
