Passenger forced to move from 12E to 26B
I was on a Continental flight from LAX-EWR in which a non-rev passenger assigned to seat 11E moved to 26B because the person in 26B wanted to sit next to his companion in 11D. He was reluctant to switch seats when the 26B pax asked to switch, since 26B is a middle seat in the back of the plane and 11E is a middle seat right behind the exit row. The flight attendant said that he should switch to 26B and consider himself lucky to even be on the flight since he's a non-rev. He reluctantly switched to 26B.
If I were the 11E passenger, I would have refused to switch unless it was a parent and small child (in this case, it wasn't). I would only switch like-for-like or better. That means I wouldn't switch more than 5 rows behind.

The guy was non-rev, so I don't feel that sorry for him. If it were a paying customer, totally different and no way would I switch.

Employees at CAL have to pay for the travel unless they work ten years of service or fifteen for improved benefits so we technically pay =)
Buddy Passes are expensive as well...so it's not 100% FREE...
That having been said we non-revs should be glad we're on the flight and be quiet too!

why wasn't the switch done before the non-rev was assigned his seat? the seat would have been open.

Non-revs are human beings too, not just to bullied around like trash. Just as you guys say (and you're right) that your free upgrades are earned with your spending on tickets, our "free" non-rev seats are part of our compensation package and are therefore earned. I feel that working crew should respect the seat assignment of a non-rev and if anything, ask discreetly about a move, giving the same respect they do to a regular PAX. I have no problem with the GA moving one nor do I have a problem with a PAX asking but if a PAX asked me, I would follow the same general rules for a switch as you guys do.
Oh, and deadheaders are considered non-rev too but they are not to be moved out of their contractually agreed upon seats unless it's for the disabled. So non-revs are not always obligated to move.
