Sort of off-topic, but what can I expect as far as upgrades go on UA PS routes as a plat? I have never flown PS before. Let me also phrase it this way- If I had a choice between EWR-LAX and JFK-LAX, which would offer me the better chance at an upgrade? I assume that Y on the PS flight blows CO Y out of the water, no?

I think if I recall properly that the UAs ps flights wont be Upgradable or at least to anything beyond E+. which is every coach seat on it with 34" , so between UA @ 34 or CO @ 31 Id go UA and brown bag my own food.

ps flights are only JFK-SFO or LAX

I dunno what IFE you can expect on CO on EWR-LAX (livetv?) but on UA you get wifi on all the p.s. planes as well as in-seat power, which is great (and overhead video if you are so inclined )

United p.s. flights are known to be pretty elite-heavy with many GS and 1K's. Since Plats are behind Premier Executives (1P), you'd have a pretty hard time upgrading on peak flights, let alone off-peak flights.

March 18 rollout for United EUA's now confirmed.

Just received the following email from Mileage Plus.

Valid only on UA operated flights. No mention of CO reciprocal UG's. Just says later this year.

Quote:
Get ready to enjoy another Mileage Plus privilege: Unlimited Domestic
Upgrades. Starting March 19, we'll automatically request an upgrade for
you and up to one companion on every paid domestic flight you take on
United, no matter when the ticket was purchased. No more certificates.
No more calling.

Mileage Plus offers the best seats for elites

When you combine Unlimited Domestic Upgrades with the complimentary
Economy Plus seating you already enjoy, you'll see that no other U.S.
airline offers elite members such generous seating privileges.

We're working hard to make flying easier and more comfortable for our
elite members. Want to know more? Visit our site for details.

And there is more to come. We think you'll be happy with what we've got
planned, so stay tuned.

Your Mileage Plus Team

yea but why blow any of them when I can grab say a 777 LAX-IAD and then ride up to NY on an RJ and save the CR1s for say Hawaii (I know UDU will run for Hawaii but why chance it). SWUs for Intl flights and Miles well I cant see blowing it for Uping when I can get a free Y tkt

But thats just me, Im sure there are those out there that will use any of the 3 to UP on the ps flights

Very interesting!

A few key points:

1. UA Y/B Instant upgrades go away starting March 19th. Everything is EUA.
Wonder if CO will eliminate Y/B/M instant up's? May make sense since Plat's on Y/B are complaining they can't get a Y/B or M up because Silvers got them first. A way to solve that problem (at least if you do not purchase at the last minute).

2. Only UA ticket stock on UA metal is eligible for EUA. Code shared flights on UA metal are not. CO upgrades based on CO metal - not CO ticket stock - wonder if this will change?

1. Boy I hope not! That would be a disaster change. maybe it is the tradeoff for allowing CR1's and the like.

2. More from UA.

Yes, I thought the M-ups are something CO instituted to further differentiate Plat from Gold/Silver

Of course if CO eliminated instant upgrades like UA is - a Plat on an M would beat Plats on lower fares and all Gold/Silver - just that it would not be instant.

CO would hold back B ups for example so that Plat's buying late would have a chance over Gold/Silver. Currently, you could have a transcon fill up with Y/B Silvers and then when a Plat buys a B they cannot get an up.

EUA would sort all that out and it would hold back F seats for true F purchasers.

If this is the case, then I'd like to see CO block UA Elites from buying these instant-up fares when this option becomes available in Q2. If someone wants to enjoy this benefit, they should join Onepass and become loyal to (and contribute consistent revenue to) Continental.
