Return Change Help Needed

I purchaced a coach EWR-BOM for about $1300(900 + taxes). I used the outbound in November with the return BOM-EWR scheduled for next week.

I was looking to change my return to Jan 5th. CO.com allows me to change the return CO 49 to either 1)One Way 2) Return 3) Multiple Destinations.

If I chose One way - I have to pay $250 change fee + 217 fare diff

If I choose return - It allows me to change for just $250 and it gives me an EWR-BOM leg for free!!! i.e I can come back to India one way anytime before November 2010. It shows the price of new ticket to be (1100 +200 taxes + $250 change fee)

Has anyone done that before? Makes no sense since I have already used EWR-BOM sector. I called BOM CO reservations and they said 'do at your own risk' as its not a valid change.

I'm confused - why wouldn't you just call the OPSC and ask to change your return leg? You should only have to pay the change fee plus any fare difference...
