EWR-SDQ on a 777?

Im searching for flights just after xmas and i see CO743 changes from a 757-300 to a 777-200 on 12/27. Is this a typo? Seasonal upgrade? or possibly a change of service for the aircraft? I flew a 777 from EWR-MCO a few years back on one of its inaugural flights. I would like to book a decent seat and not have it changed on a change of metal. I know its possible on any flight but would like to try to minimize my chances as much as possible.

After looking further at this route it looks like the metal varies between a 757-300, 757-200 and a 737-300

Not typo. CO doesn't fly on a few days to Hong Kong/China over Christmas holiday. They can use the 772 on some flights to popular destinations in the Caribbean. EWR-SDQ are scheduled for 772 for the Dec 22, 23, 24 and 27. 764 on Dec 25.

I should add that many European routes as well as Japan and India also see some "holidays", not just Hong Kong/China.

Routes that get seasonal upgrades include:

772 replacing 752 on CO110 EWR-LHR for 12/18 and 12/20.

764 replacing 762 on CO53 IAH-EZE for about 2 weeks, swapping with the IAH-GIG aircraft.

Extra 764 CO125 IAH-HNL for about 3 weeks (to make it three 767-400s daily).

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7D11 Safari/528.16)

That would be fun to do, too bad it is 900$ from sea

But this is BF equipment on a non-BF route, right? Doesn't that mean cheap FC-upgrade miles to snag a BF seat?

Cheap miles with no co-pay (15K each way) or EUA. :-:

SDQ sees a ton of baggage and freight throughout the year and that is multiplied during the holiday as people fly home to visit friends and relatives. In fact, some airlines have issues getting all the bags on flights. I am sure that this 772 will be packed to the ceiling for these "special" flights.

What route is this 777 coming from? HKG seems to be business as usual.

I fly MIA-MAR(Maracaibo) on a 757 and the gate agent said it can be weight restricted due to the cargo during the holidays. I never heard of a 757 being weight restricted on a 3 hour flight.

Also SDQ shows on the CO site as (Z)BusinessFirst, so no EUA?

Incorrect. The website will show the class based more on the aircraft than the way the service is marketed while the latter is what actually determines whether the flight is eligible for EUAs. The EWR-SDQ market is definitely eligible.

Another CO.O.L. I am shocked.

From EWR:
No service to PEK on Dec 24, 25, 27
No service to DEL on Dec 24, 30
No service to BOM and HKG on Dec 23, 25
No service to PVG on Dec 22, 24, 25, 27, 30
No service to NRT on Dec 24

From IAH:
No service to AMS on Dec 22, 23, 24, 26, 29
Only one flight to LHR on Dec 23, 25, 29
No service to LHR Dec 24

That's 25 roundtrips of regular longhaul 772 flights not operating. Way more than enough to run three roundtrips to SDQ and two extras from EWR to LHR.

Those 777 pilots are probably happy with their December bid package.
