Baggage Allowance Changes

Hi all, not sure if this has been mentioned already but it seems that CO have begun the process of coming into line with *A elite baggage policy.

https://www.continental.com/web/en-U...age/check.aspx

Basically it seems that Gold and Plat members now get 3 bags free of charge ^

I have a problem with the wording, look at this:
The following customers will not be charged service fees to check a first or second bag:

* Silver Elite members*
* Platinum and Gold Elite customers**
* First Class customers*
* BusinessFirst customers**
* Continental Airlines Chase primary cardmembers will have their first checked-bag fees automatically waived
* Continental Airlines Presidential Plus primary cardmembers will have their first and second checked-bag fees automatically waived
* Any customer traveling on full fare economy class (Y) tickets
* Active U.S. military personnel+
* U.S. military dependents traveling with U.S. military personnel on personal travel++
* U.S. military dependents traveling on official business (with documentation)
it says at the top 'first or second' then the first line about chase says only the first....

That applies to a Chase cardmember, who is not a Presidential Plus card member, who is not an elite member.

This is the note accompanying the Silver baggage policy.

*May check two bags at no charge as long as each bag is a maximum 70 lbs (32 kg) and 62 linear inches (157 cm) (total length + width + height).

Yes, after re-reading it, it is garbeled.

I know what it is now, I just hope it continues to be 70 as *S pax typically only get 50 pounds.

Domestic First - weight reduction

One thing not mentioned here (not sure if in any other thread) - but CO reduced the baggage allowanced for Domestic First.

Domestic First passengers now only get two bags @ 50 lbs max.

Before Domestic First got same 3 x 70 lbs as Gold/Plat Elite, *Gold, BF, military - plus Silver had same.

I recommended some friends from SNA go CO to OGG/HNL in F - but now I had to call them to say they had to keep their bags under 50 lbs. Check 2 bags under 50 lbs rather than one at 60 lbs.

For tickets purchased prior to October 19, 2009 the following customers are allowed to check up to 3 bags, with a maximum weight of 70 lbs.:

Customers ticketed and confirmed in BusinessFirst at time of baggage check-in
Customers ticketed in Domestic First Class, First Class, or International Business Class at time of baggage check-in.
Continental OnePass Elite members
Active U.S. military personnel, whether or not or military orders
U.S. military dependents travelling with military personnel, and without military personnel when on military business.

For tickets purchased on or after October 19, 2009, the following customers are allowed to check up to 3 bags, with a maximum weight of 70 lbs.:

Customers ticketed and confirmed in BusinessFirst at time of baggage check-in
Star Gold members, including Continental Platinum and Gold Elite members
Active U.S. military personnel, whether or not or military orders
U.S. military dependents travelling with military personnel, and without military personnel when on military business.

Yup...been discussed. It is a notable downgrade to the F service.

My son in the US military needs to go to Norway to see his fiance and this will be good news since he needs to take several gifts. What I understand, on say Continental, he gets 3 pc. at 70#, however, since he will use partner connections, I think the limit will be 50#. He will originate from RDU. If anyone can confirm this I'd appreciate it.

If he is flying CO from RDU-EWR-Europe then he gets 3x70# on the outbound. The bags will be checked all the way through and even if there are partner flights after the CO flights the bags will be passed through without charge. On the return it will depend on which carrier he is checking in with in Norway.

One minor caveat that I didn't include initially. My assumption was that it was a single reservation/PNR so that CO checks the bag all the way through. If he is on multiple tickets then there is a chance that CO doesn't check it all the way through and things get more confusing and expensive. But it should work out OK.
