Darkness at noon: Shanghai for the total eclipse (July 22)?

Seems I'll be there, wonder if anyone else will be and if there is the possibility of organizing transport, etc., as a group -- followed by some sort of DO!

And yeah, the plan is to leave town for viewing to reduce the probability it is totally invisible due to smog.

I'll be about 80 miles south of Chengdu,
maybe on top of Emei-shan.

Hopefully less haze at 10,000 ft.

That should work, but it most likely means you wouldn't be available for a Shanghai area DO!

Thumbs up

We will be on this tour, so will be in Shanghai on the Sunday and Monday nights prior to the eclipse, and the Friday night (at the airport) after.

for 2 nights, $50 + 2400 points total.

We ended up booking the Landison Putuoshan resort and will be flying to Zhoushan/Putuoshan. The flight times are very limited so even though the eclipse is over before noon, the flight back to Shanghai isn't until 9pm or so, so I guess we will be touring the island!

But is there enough people for an actual DO, either in Shanghai before/after or Putuoshan on day-of? Doesn't seem like it.

I too will be in Shanghai with 2 other eclipse chasers. Another FTr is wimping out and going on a cruise south of the Japan. I am more worried about clouds than smog. You can still see the eclipse thru smog. Just imagine the smog are cirrus clouds. We are staying on land, but heading out of the city itself. Lastly, the darkness at noon title was an inside joke relevant to last years Russian eclipse in Novosibirsk which I saw with a couple of FTrs.

The main thread for this is turning out to be in the China forum.

I have to ask: have you been to Shanghai or Beijing before? If you haven't, then you don't know REAL smog! There are times when staying in my hotel (where my room was on the 80th floor or so), I haven't been able to see the ground, solely due to the smog, and it is routine not to be able to see two blocks away.

Cloud cover occurs about 50% of the time mostly anywhere you go within the eclipse band within, say, 1000km of Shanghai, according to the NASA charts.
