IAD Plane Pull - September 6th, 2008 (Cancelled)
Once again, its the Dulles Day Plane Pull for Special Olympics on Saturday, September 6th at Dulles. The festival area opens at 11:00 am with the actual pulls occurring between 11:30 am and 3:30 pm.
It is held along some of the cargo hangars away from the passenger terminals on the airport grounds.
From the website:
What IS the actual Plane Pull?
The pull is a fun team competition to see which group can pull a cargo jet the fastest. Teams are made up of 20 members, who all line up adjacent to a huge rope attached to the aircraft. The starter signals when to start and starts the stopwatch. After the team pulls the aircraft 12 feet, the stopwatch stops and the elapsed time is recorded as the team score. Each team is then weighed (as a group) and assembles to have their team photo taken.
Its a Family Day
Its more than just a Plane Pull! An entire festival has grown up around the competition, and features a wide range of events and activities for the entire family. Come check out the car show, aircraft displays, exhibitor areas, games, & rides in the Kids Corner, live music, concessions and more! Theres even a School Bus Pull for the kids so gather your friends and family and make a day of it!
Even has a Kids Bus Pull^
Hey kids, gather your friends and come play tug-of war with a school bus!
Teams (friends, family, classmates, club members, sports teams) will compete to see who can pull a full size school bus the fastest. Everyone that participates gets a Bus Pull t-shirt.
There will be a car show and plenty of aircraft displays. You can also form Pull Teams which are comprised of 20 persons giving a minimum of $1000 through fundraisers, pledges, and / or company sponsorship ($50 per team member)
We've already missed the deadline for getting the customized shirts if we wanted to form a Flyertalk Pull team but entrance is still available and you get the official event t-shirts
If there are enough people interested, which should try and meet up for maybe a luncheon/dinner or even enter??

I will be there early in the day with my kids
although since it is week 2 of the CFB season, I'll be leaving 2 p.m. at the latest to catch some games on the tube

I'm currently planning to attend as a spectator and would be interested in a late lunch. I doubt that I'll stay for the whole time, but I do want to watch at least a few teams engage in the competition.

It's looking very likely I'll be home this weekend. I won't have a ton of time, but would be up to meet for a lunch and possibly a quick visit to the event (I enjoyed it last year).
What are the lunch plans? Bungalow billiards is always a good choice, reasonably priced and close to IAD (and my house
) It's located at 13891 Metrotech Drive at 50 and Old Centreville Road (a block from 28)

It's looking as though we might see the rains from Hugo on Saturday. Is there a rain day?
Also, I discovered I've got a theatre ticket for 2:00 pm Saturday, so I'll need to depart by 1:10 pm if the events proceed as scheduled -- meaning I probably wouldn't be available for lunch.

The Dulles Day Family Festival, featuring the 16th annual Plane Pull, was scheduled to take place tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 6, at Washington Dulles International Airport. Due to severe weather predictions from the approaching Tropical Storm Hanna, this event has been canceled. There is no rain date. The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority and Special Olympics Virginia would like to thank all of the Plane Pull teams, sponsors and volunteers for their support of Special Olympics Virginia. I'm guessing there is no rain date due to the massive logisitics (red tape) involved in getting everything set with MWAA, TSA, etc.
I agree that cancelling the event was a prudent decision considering the severe weather conditions.
There's always next year!
