Honolulu, August 5, Tuesday

Have an overnight stop here on award travel to Beijing for the 2008 Olympic Games. Anyone up for dinner, possibly at the Aloha Tower Marketplace? Open to other locations.

Ripper3785 has suggested Phuket Thai in the McCully Shopping Center, which is fine with me as it's a short walk from my hotel. What time works?

I wish I could be there, Rick and Tom.
Looks like tom has a busy week.

(As usual, any photos are appreciated - and Tom, I will check your pages in case you've visited the gibbons at the zoo!)

A Honolulu Zoo visit isn't in the plans for this visit. I'm going to try and upload some photos every day of this trip.

Did you see the article today in the Australian about air quality at the pool in Beijing? This is not good.

Good article, thanks Tom. The arrival of the Aussie swimmers, then the US team, was in last night's news.

This article is even better. Swimmers all mistyeyed...[SMH]
Namechecks Natalie but asks why no US swimmer would front the media. Phelps was supposed to, but apparently did a runner and nobody else was allowed to talk!

I'm really looking forward to more of your pics from the trip.

I think you should expect to get a record number of hits on some of your pics... especially if the WR champs like Natalie and the Aussie girls set new WR times from Saturday.
(My zoo question was slightly facetious as your excellent Honolulu Zoo snaps were taken probably less than a year ago )

Enjoy your 'Ripper' dinner!

[Back to Honolulu - quick trivia, no cheating/googling...
What year was the Ala Moana center opened to shoppers?]

Wish I could be there but I'll be celebrating a special occasion. Phuket Thai is a great restaurant. Enjoy!

Seems like it's been there every year I've gone over since the mid-70's. Late 60's, maybe?

I'm in the Admiral's Club at SFO waiting for departure after a priceline night at the Sheraton. Lines 100 deep at the check in counters, so the F line with about 6 folks came in really handy. I should have checked in on line, but wasn't sure that would work with the Chinese visa.

Looking forward to dinner tonight.

Enjoy dinner with Rick and Mrs Ripper. Good times!

PS. There's a place everyone raves about, not far from Ala Moana I think, as a place to eat. I think it's some kind of diner.

Have you tried that on your visits?
I hope someone spots your bright FT luggage tag somewhere along the way.

You mean Side Street Inn? Overrated, IMO.

Nice dining with you Tom911. Go Team USA!

That's the first mention of lilikoi ribs that I can recall in regards to SSI. The faves I've heard of are the pork chops and the fried rice. The fried rice is pretty good, but not the best I've had. The pork chops are essentially shake n baked, served pupu style with ketchup. What's so exciting about that? Anyway. I'd def give the ribs a try, should a DO be held there in the future.

+1

One of my favorite restaurants in Honolulu. Very friendly, big portions, and very creative cuisine (although a bit heavy).

My fave is the ribeye served on the hot plate. I always tell myself that I'll get something else, but then some other table next-door orders one, and the smell just gets to me...
