How about Rustico on Slaters Lane in Alexandria? They have a really wide selection of microbrews on tap.

Not exactly Tysons!

gvdIAD Jul 14, 2007 2:00 pm

I've been meaning to make a return appearance at a DC event. I might be able to make something on the 17th in Tysons if it's late enough (read 8ish). If it's in downtown DC, I could probably make something a little earlier than that.

But it is VA. Alas, can't attend on the 17th.

boilermaker Jul 15, 2007 9:09 am

I might actually be able to make one of these! I'll be in DC on the 17th to 20th, but I think Tuesday is the only night available for dinner. If nothing is going on, anybody know of any places near the hotel I'll be at - they have us staying at the Mandarin Oriental

You can't do better for dinner than CityZen (http://www.mandarinoriental.com/hotel/535000431.asp), in the very hotel where you'll be ensconsed. It's not inexpensive (far from it), but value for money is outstanding, especially if you go for the tasting menu.

pranu Jul 16, 2007 10:19 am

Alright - weekend is over - back to work - read FT.

So Tuesday 17th is final. And we have suggestions of Rustico and Tysons and a request for late.

Directions Warning:

Route 1 Construction Project

Construction is currently underway to straighten the Route 1 corridor into Alexandria. Starting on or around Thursday, July 6th, you will not be able to make a left turn onto Slaters Lane from southbound Route 1. There is a short detour heading southbound on Jefferson Davis Highway (Route 1) to access Slaters Lane. Heading south, turn right onto Fayette Street (veer left at the bend), then left onto First Street. Take a left at the light onto Route 1 heading northbound. Veer right at the light onto Slaters Lane and proceed to the second light. Rustico is on your left.

Global_Hi_Flyer Jul 16, 2007 3:15 pm

I'm a definite. See you all at Rustico on the 17th.

u600213 Jul 16, 2007 5:38 pm

OK, I'm here this week for work and saw this thread so count me in.

Condition One Jul 16, 2007 6:53 pm

It's only a few miles from my hotel, so count me in!

DullesJason Jul 17, 2007 2:18 am

I wish I could make it but this week I am driving cross-country to California (flying back). Just finished day 2.

I'll be looking for the next event though.

GrizShel Jul 17, 2007 5:57 am

Too tired from traveling - and have to recuperate quickly this week as I am also going away for the next 2 weekends. But for those who want to use public transport to get to the Rustico dinner, here is what Rustico says:

METRO

Braddock Road (Yellow & Blue Line)

Walking from the Braddock Road station:

Head north on West Street to Madison Street. Turn right onto Madison & go two blocks to Henry Street. Turn left walking along Route 1. Cross Route 1 at the McDonald's and go to your left along Route 1, veering off to your right at the bridge construction onto Slaters Lane. Continue down the hill, crossing Powhatan Street and continuing around the bend. Rustico is on the northeast corner of the intersection at Slaters Lane and Potomac Greens Drive.

Buses from the Braddock Road station:

The #4 DASH bus towards Fairfax Street stops right in front of the restaurant (www.dashbus.com).

From DC using the Metro Bus:

Take the 11Y bus from Farragut Square toward Mt. Vernon

pranu Jul 17, 2007 10:01 am

Alrighty - 7 People confirmed as of now. Just a friendly bump for others.

See you all today!

Count me in!! Since I will have some time to kill after I get off work at 4:30 I'm going to head to the CRC at DCA for a couple free drinks. Anyone who wants to join me is welcome to come!

Crazy isn't it :D

chtiet Jul 17, 2007 1:23 pm

OK, count me in as well - I can make it after all.

PS - you can also easily reach the place by taking the GW Parkway, if the whole Route 1 thing sounds too complicated. All you need to do is basically turn right as soon as you see the first light on the Parkway in Alexandria (if coming from the North).

pranu Jul 17, 2007 1:27 pm

Alright - just called them - they dont do reservations after 6:30 - but expect to be able to handle a group of 10 odd at 7 PM with no issues.

So I guess whoever gets there first - if you could please arrange for a table for 10 (expandable to more) and let them know that "FlyerTalk" is there - then the rest can join you. Thanks!

And people - please bring cash :) Just keeps things simple.

Sad to say I can't make it tonight after all :( Enjoy some brews on my behalf, all!

So what about 8/8? Fits nicely between 7/17 and the tentatively scheduled 9/6 event.

chrisw Jul 17, 2007 9:05 pm

I swear I posted to this thread last night saying I was coming tonight.

It was great to see you all tonight.

8/8 works for me. Waterstrider too, I think.

Please schedule whatever you can but I figured I'd post that I'm targeting the week after that (or the one following) based on a request from someone at tonight's dinner and their schedule (and that they have something I so very much want to borrow for an upcoming trip ;) ). Based on a different discussion with another FT'er, it'll be somewhere in the Fairfax area, exact time & place tbd.

Global_Hi_Flyer Jul 18, 2007 3:50 pm

8/8 and the week after probably work for me, at least as I can tell right now.

In general, Fri, Sat and Sundays don't work, at least until I get completely moved.

Oh, in that case isn't it Party time about now? If you're changing carpets, you definitely should do it before not after. Really, didn't mean to apply any pressure here - totally your call.

I'm waiting to hear back from DullesJason before posting a date & venue for the Fairfax area the second week of august.

Answer: Texas BBQ at Global_Hi_Flyer's place.
Question: Where is the next DC HH?

Apologies to Carnac, the magnificent.

headinclouds Jul 23, 2007 7:46 pm

deleted, dup post...

GoingAway Jul 23, 2007 7:49 pm

wow you are putting him up for a specific menu  ... anyway, I might be up for rest week, esp if it's in VA. What places were you thinking of and what dates?

I picked a terrible time to stop eating meat.

My vote would be for Colvin Run ... hope you pick a date, I'm in town. As my schedule is up in the air a bit I won't know for sure if I'm here, until just before the date.

I'd be more amenable to it (soon) if the repairs to the back deck were finished. It's been 4 weeks now, no end in sight. There's really not enough furniture (read: chairs) to do anything inside.

Let's see how it goes.... maybe later this summer/early fall. Maybe.

Hmmm, guess I need to learn something about cooking Tejas BBQ, then. I'm a Virginia boy, don't know much 'bout Texas BBQ other than it's a large slab of meat and quite tasty... :)

I like Colvin Run - nice, but a but pricey IIRC. Never eaten at either of the others.

It's restaurant week, fixed price for a 3 (?) course meal ... all the more reason to pick a place you aren't going to visit regularly.
