For those staying in the area longer, a cruise on Milford Sound is recommended. This takes all day if going 1 or 2 directions by bus. Can also fly (with fantastic views up very close), but need to allow more days since often cancelled due to weather.
Other activities that may be of interest. Skydiving Jetboating Walks - ranging from short, flat rambles to 4 world class multi-day hikes in the mountains 4wd rides up to the abandoned gold mining areas of Macetown golf at Millbrook Canyoning Flight simulator (try flying into ZQN yourself!) fly by wire horse riding scenic flights - Fiordland or Mt Aspiring or further rafting river yaks and similar (body surfing in the rapids) sail an America's Cup yacht Lord of the Rings location tours If you want more info on any of these activities please let me know. |
Bump!
Dates on calendar... ^ ^
...now just a question, where in the 'mainland' do you anticipate will be the DO-central? (just so I don't spend too much time there when I go back to N.Z. soon ;) ) |
Apologies. I meant to update by now. Thanks WindFlyer for reminding me.
There was some lobbying for Queenstown and not for my other mainland suggestions, so going with the wishes of FTers with Queenstown. Both Qantas (one world) and Air NZ (star alliance) fly to Queenstown from both Auckland and Christchurch. So not too hard to get to. Closest sky team gets is Auckland & Christchurch on Korean. The flight in to Queenstown is especially stunning as weave between the mountains on approach. Good views out both sides, but best on the right. The views on the flight out of Queenstown are okay but not as good as on the way in. I'll add accommodation info later. As with the rest of New Zealand, major chain hotels are few and far between. However Queenstown is a major tourist spot so there is a wide range of good accommodation ranging from backpackers through to luxury hideaway lodges. |
This is tempting... I'll stay on the radar.. and hope I can make it :)
|
I will be able to pitch up although I already have a meeting scheduled in Wellington on the Friday. At least I will be able to make it for the Saturday (and possibly Friday). I'm pleased it will be in Queenstown
Jeff |
jswong, you already have a meeting scheduled for 11 months time?! If it is in the morning or midday then you can still fly down on the Friday.
|
Sounds fund. Never have been to the South Island myself. Though it looks as if I won't be in Kiwi Land during that time of year next year. :( But from the looks of it, you sure are planning ahead Kiwi Flyer. ;)
BTW doesn't NZ still fly NRT-CHC and codeshares it with JL on certain days of the week? |
Yes NZ flies triangle route from Tokyo and Osaka to Christchurch and on to Auckland. JL codeshares on these flights.
|
Looks like i've got out of my meeting so will pitch up on the Friday but might be a little tired out as i'll be returning from BOS
I can, if folk like, contribute a bottle of 1988 Vintage Krug to share during one of the activities Jeff |

This is tempting, and I've put it my list of options. Way too far out to make a call on it just yet.
|
I've made a note, but it's way too far out for me to make a call on at this stage; but I should be able to make it. It will depend on where I'm based after June.
ZQN sounds like a nice place to have it; I've never actually taken the time to visit! |
Kiwi Flyer,
Could you put Sue and I down as definite maybe's? ie we'll be there if at all possible. ^ :D |
