Kiwi Mainland Do 9-11 November 2007

Yes it is a long time away but awards (especially in premium cabins) for the long (from almost everywhere) trip to NZ go fast, so I thought you might appreciate the heads up.

More info to be posted soon.

PS Mainland means South Island of New Zealand. The most relevant international gateways are
- Auckland (AKL) from London, Asia, USA, South America, Australia and Pacific
- Christchurch (CHC) from Australia and Pacific
- Queenstown (ZQN) from Sydney.

For One World folk, Qantas is the main presence - plus Cathay Pacific from HKG and LAN from SCL and SYD. The closest British Airways flies is SYD.

For Star Alliance folk, Air NZ is the main presence - plus Thai and Singapore from Asia. The closest United flies is SYD and MEL.

For Sky Team folk, the only airline is Korean. Malaysian may also be useful.

Venue is Queenstown

If people can list their flights we should be able to share transport to/from town (as well as meet up in the airport lounges of course).

I'll be handing these out at lunchtime on Saturday. Anyone who is attending dinner but not lunch please contact me so I can make other arrangements.

The good news is we can take extra orders for the luge at the discounted rate ($26 for 5) right until Friday (inclusive). Last minute luge (or kiwi haka or ...) orders will be at retail rates.

Itinerary

The price listed is the price for adults (please advise if you need child rates) and is in NZD. Where I manage to get lower rates the difference will be refunded at the Do.

Events marked ~ require pre-payment. Update #1 advises how this can be done. Pre-payment is required by 21 Oct 2007.

Friday 9th November

FpWP 1600-1930 $70~ Walter Peak Heritage excursion. Meet at Steamer Wharf 1530 (boarding closes 1540).
Cross Lake Wakatipu on steamship TSS Earnslaw to visit a high country farm. Local wine & cheese tasting included.

FeDD 2000-late no prepayment required Restaurant Dinner at Bezu.

Saturday 10th November

SaSC 0800-1230 $120~ Skippers Canyon Heritage Tour - visit the rugged back country, including the site of one of the world's richest gold rushes, by comfortable 4WD. (Note $15 refund due for those who prepaid.) Meet at Crowne Plaza at 0755.

SpLU 1300-1500 no prepayment required Pub Lunch - Pog Mahones, located on the waterfront.

Free time, or walk around the town centre (route dependent on weather).

SpLG 1730-1930 $26~ Luge - 5 rides. Extra special rate - only available in combination with our Skyline buffet dinner.

SeDD 1915-late $45~ Skyline Buffet Dinner + gondola. Dinner is at 2015. Try other activities while up the mountain - walks (free), parapenting ($$), bungy jump ($$), drinking ($), kiwi haka ($) - or just enjoy the evening views. (Thanks to Blackcloud for securing this great rate ^)

Sunday 11th November

SuAT 0905-1030 no prepayment required ($13 Connectabus day pass) Arrowtown historic village. Explore the small town on foot.

SuBR 1030 approx Cafe Brunch at Arrowtown

Bump!

Dates on calendar... ^ ^

...now just a question, where in the 'mainland' do you anticipate will be the DO-central? (just so I don't spend too much time there when I go back to N.Z. soon )

Apologies. I meant to update by now. Thanks WindFlyer for reminding me.

There was some lobbying for Queenstown and not for my other mainland suggestions, so going with the wishes of FTers with Queenstown.

Both Qantas (one world) and Air NZ (star alliance) fly to Queenstown from both Auckland and Christchurch. So not too hard to get to. Closest sky team gets is Auckland & Christchurch on Korean.

The flight in to Queenstown is especially stunning as weave between the mountains on approach. Good views out both sides, but best on the right. The views on the flight out of Queenstown are okay but not as good as on the way in.

I'll add accommodation info later. As with the rest of New Zealand, major chain hotels are few and far between. However Queenstown is a major tourist spot so there is a wide range of good accommodation ranging from backpackers through to luxury hideaway lodges.

I will be able to pitch up although I already have a meeting scheduled in Wellington on the Friday. At least I will be able to make it for the Saturday (and possibly Friday). I'm pleased it will be in Queenstown

jswong, you already have a meeting scheduled for 11 months time?! If it is in the morning or midday then you can still fly down on the Friday.

Sounds fund. Never have been to the South Island myself. Though it looks as if I won't be in Kiwi Land during that time of year next year. But from the looks of it, you sure are planning ahead Kiwi Flyer.

BTW doesn't NZ still fly NRT-CHC and codeshares it with JL on certain days of the week?

Yes NZ flies triangle route from Tokyo and Osaka to Christchurch and on to Auckland. JL codeshares on these flights.

Looks like i've got out of my meeting so will pitch up on the Friday but might be a little tired out as i'll be returning from BOS

I can, if folk like, contribute a bottle of 1988 Vintage Krug to share during one of the activities

This is tempting, and I've put it my list of options. Way too far out to make a call on it just yet.

I've made a note, but it's way too far out for me to make a call on at this stage; but I should be able to make it. It will depend on where I'm based after June.

ZQN sounds like a nice place to have it; I've never actually taken the time to visit!
