FT Etiquette: When to say, 'Welcome to FT?'

What is the accepted etiquette to greet a new poster with 'Welcome to Flyertalk'? What is the number of posts? Less than 10? 20? I justed posted in the CO OP forum, and the poster I was replying to had only 16 posts. Obviously, not a newbie, but not that many posts either. I was not sure if this poster should be 'Welcomed' or not.

The search routine returned over 13,000 hits for the phrase 'Welcome to FleyerTalk', making it difficult to determine if this has been addressed previously.

Thanks in advance for the input.

go by their join date not post count :P

So then how long? A week? A Month? 5 months? If so, then "Welcome to Flyer talk!" :D

I would think it must be some combination of post count & join date.

redbeard911 Nov 15, 2006 1:29 pm

I'll offer a "Welcome to FT" if the poster has five or less posts.

janey Nov 15, 2006 1:29 pm

Well, I was never officially welcomed to FT when I joined (sniff, nobody noticed poor little me) so you can certainly give me a warm welcome now, JohnneeO! :)

Welcome to FlyerTalk, Janey! I think that being officially welcomed is a great way to commemorate the impending arrival of your 1,000th post.

Ocn Vw 1K Nov 15, 2006 1:58 pm

janey, let me also add my welcome to you to FlyerTalk nunc pro tunc. When you cross that special 1000 post milestone, feel free to celebrate it in this thread

peteropny Nov 15, 2006 2:07 pm

Nobody gave me a "welcome to Flyertalk" either :D

Seriously, I don't think there's any official etiquette to welcoming people to Flyertalk - I often will say welcome to "new" people in the two forums I moderate if I notice that they are posting for the first time - generally less than one month and less than 10 posts as a rough rule of thumb.

Canarsie Nov 15, 2006 2:27 pm

I was not welcomed to FlyerTalk until I happened to post many months later during a discussion that I was never officially welcomed to FlyerTalk.

I have no idea in which thread on FlyerTalk that occurred, but that does not matter.

I can honestly say that I have never felt unwelcome to post on FlyerTalk since I first posted in December of 2002.

Regardless, I believe that one can say “Welcome to FlyerTalk” to virtually any FlyerTalk member without straying away from “etiquette”, as long as one’s “Join Date” is not later than the “Join Date” of the FlyerTalk member to whom they are welcoming. That can be a bit awkward. However, expressing and extending a welcome to a fellow FlyerTalk member is usually meant in a positive way.

So, to all of the FlyerTalk members whom I have not said so yet, welcome to FlyerTalk!

cpx Nov 15, 2006 2:30 pm

Canarsie, peteropny, janey Welcome to FT! :)

I would have welcomed you if I was a member when joined.

PS: I did get a few welcomes when I joined a few months back. Thank you all for that.

for OP: I extend my welcome if the join date is recent.. or if its a first post.

I stand corrected...

:D sorry for the violation of the policy... i had to make an exception
for some of the best FTers who never received their much deserved welcome.

dhammer53 Nov 15, 2006 10:05 pm

I always welcome new folks whenever they join us in Chat.
As a matter of fact, my good friend FlyinHawaiian takes over for me in my absence. ;)

Why don't you check it out between 10:30 and just past midnight.
And for the non-Americans 2230-0030. ;)
And for the Brits 0330-0530 GMT.

Is this anti-ozzie discrimination? :D

Heck it is late afternoon Wednesday here now, and I never know when Chat is on.

I went in there last night (1st time in ages) and Gene Fowler and DCA were the only ones still awake. :)

Back to newbies if I notice someone with 1 or 2 posts I'll always say welcome.

Actually a workmate of Margaret's joined only yesterday and her first 2 posts are here in the ORD forum:

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=624995

She is ECSTATIC about FT and has been babbling all day about it in the office, she is so excited about the advice she got.

If anyone has time to add a few more welcomes she'll never stop raving about FT is my guess. :D

So there is a tale of a new member feeling right at home from day #1 as a few folks said "hi" and the advice given was friendly and very useful to her.

An object lesson of how Randy would like to see all newcomers welcomed is my guess. @:-)

Thanks for the belated but lovely welcomes! Oh, and...

ding ding ding! My 1000th post!

Like Canarsie said, I've never felt unwelcome but what a nice way to reach my 1000th post by thanking FTrs for their kindnesses. :-:

Pat89339 Nov 16, 2006 12:32 pm

I was also one of the unwelcomed ones. <sniff sniff> So I always make it a point to welcome new FTers whenever I see a newbie posting, usually based on the join date and number of posts (less than 5).

I'm also giving a big FT welcome to janey, peteropny, and Canarsie, even though your join dates were long before mine. :D

cartcarol Nov 16, 2006 1:48 pm

I never got the welcome either, but I happily assumed it was because I'd read a lot of threads on FT before I offered my first post, so when I *did* post, I kinda had the lingo down... which made it easier for me to "blend in," which maybe made it easier for people to miss the fact that I was a FT infant...

Welcome to FT!! :D

mahasamatman Nov 16, 2006 3:51 pm

Personally, I only do it for the first post, and I generally won't just post a welcome with nothing else (i.e. I like to have something substantive in the post).

Yup - that's me, the great babbler ;) But seriously, the welcomes and advice have been terrific! I hadn't heard of FT before, and what I've missed ... I just hope to be able to give back some time.

andre1970 Nov 17, 2006 2:52 am

A welcome is always ...welcome!

slippahs Nov 17, 2006 3:34 am

I never rec'd a welcome either. Though I always make it a point to welcome new posters with two or less posts that've joined within the month.

Shouldn't we welcome posters every time they post? I mean, though they might not be new to the forum, they are just signing on and have generally been off FT for a fixed amount of time (or at least, I hope no one is on here 24/7). So it would only be rude not to welcome posters every time they sign on to post. :D

So, welcome to the next poster and all those above.

To offer a contrarian opinion, I think the welcome should be withheld until you're sure they're someone you want to welcome! :p :D

(Well, someone had to say it... ;) )

I think I agree with the rest of the people... you should welcome somebody
within first couple of posts.

On FT you can always take back the Welcome... (called suspended)
if you dont like them :D

Um, no. Only moderators (of which there are about 70) can do that. The rest of us 100,000+ cannot. ;)

Anyhow, I made a joke and you ruined it by being serious. :p

Welcome to FT, Kathy!

(Making up for not having welcomed you earlier.)

Philosophical question: why is it that so many of the welcomes go along with either (a) "but this is posted in the wrong place" or (b) "this has been answered 741,297 times, do a search?" I think I know the answer...

By the way, the very first time I posted on FT, I got flamed. Obviously, that didn't stop me! ;)

slippahs Nov 17, 2006 10:14 am

This thread got me interested in what my first post actually was. So I did a quick FT search for it. ;)

Here it is: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showt...256#post454256

No welcome in the post. But thanks for the welcome above, chrissxb!

Here's how to find your own first post:
(1) Use the advance search feature: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/search.php
(2) Type in your "User Name" under "User Name:"
(3) Under "Find Posts from", select "A Year Ago" and "Older"
(4) "Sort Results by" "in Ascending Order"

If the search feature works, your first post should be the first one brought up. :)

Perhaps you should post this valuable information in the Your First Post on FlyerTalk thread, slippahs — and welcome to FlyerTalk!

magic111 Nov 17, 2006 10:28 am

Well I'm in the crowd that did not receive a welcome either.

And my first post was in "Community"

I welcomed your significant other in person in Venice a couple of years ago.

Does that count?

Is it politically correct to welcome members back after they've been banned? ;)

Catman Nov 19, 2006 7:36 am

I think everytime you can go onto FT and can LOG ON and you are not suspended or banned that's a welcome (an unpronounced and posted one but an understood one.)

So, a MEOWY WELCOME to everyone... veterans and newbees to another day in the land of Flyertalk. (that should cover anyone.)

Plus, if you go on the main page it says "Welcome to the world's most popular frequent Flyer community."

I didn't get a welcome but there were like 20 members when I first joined. It's no big deal to me.

I feel welcome everytime I go to Flyertalk.

Have a MEOWY Thanksgiving (for those in the U.S. and those traveling around the world celebrating the day with Guinness and other good stuff ;) )
