FT Etiquette: When to say, 'Welcome to FT?'
 

What is the accepted etiquette to greet a new poster with 'Welcome to Flyertalk'? What is the number of posts? Less than 10? 20? I justed posted in the CO OP forum, and the poster I was replying to had only 16 posts. Obviously, not a newbie, but not that many posts either. I was not sure if this poster should be 'Welcomed' or not.

The search routine returned over 13,000 hits for the phrase 'Welcome to FleyerTalk', making it difficult to determine if this has been addressed previously.

go by their join date not post count :P

So then how long? A week? A Month? 5 months? If so, then "Welcome to Flyer talk!" :D

I would think it must be some combination of post count & join date.

I'll offer a "Welcome to FT" if the poster has five or less posts.

Well, I was never officially welcomed to FT when I joined (sniff, nobody noticed poor little me) so you can certainly give me a warm welcome now, JohnneeO! :)

Welcome to FlyerTalk, Janey! I think that being officially welcomed is a great way to commemorate the impending arrival of your 1,000th post.

janey, let me also add my welcome to you to FlyerTalk nunc pro tunc. When you cross that special 1000 post milestone, feel free to celebrate it in this thread

Seriously, I don't think there's any official etiquette to welcoming people to Flyertalk - I often will say welcome to "new" people in the two forums I moderate if I notice that they are posting for the first time - generally less than one month and less than 10 posts as a rough rule of thumb.

I was not welcomed to FlyerTalk until I happened to post many months later during a discussion that I was never officially welcomed to FlyerTalk.

I have no idea in which thread on FlyerTalk that occurred, but that does not matter.

I can honestly say that I have never felt unwelcome to post on FlyerTalk since I first posted in December of 2002.

Regardless, I believe that one can say “Welcome to FlyerTalk” to virtually any FlyerTalk member without straying away from “etiquette”, as long as one’s “Join Date” is not later than the “Join Date” of the FlyerTalk member to whom they are welcoming. That can be a bit awkward. However, expressing and extending a welcome to a fellow FlyerTalk member is usually meant in a positive way.

So, to all of the FlyerTalk members whom I have not said so yet, welcome to FlyerTalk!

I would have welcomed you if I was a member when joined.


PS: I did get a few welcomes when I joined a few months back. Thank you all for that.

for OP: I extend my welcome if the join date is recent.. or if its a first post.

I always welcome new folks whenever they join us in Chat.
As a matter of fact, my good friend FlyinHawaiian takes over for me in my absence. ;)

Heck it is late afternoon Wednesday here now, and I never know when Chat is on.

I went in there last night (1st time in ages) and Gene Fowler and DCA were the only ones still awake. :)

Back to newbies if I notice someone with 1 or 2 posts I'll always say welcome.

She is ECSTATIC about FT and has been babbling all day about it in the office, she is so excited about the advice she got.

If anyone has time to add a few more welcomes she'll never stop raving about FT is my guess. :D

So there is a tale of a new member feeling right at home from day #1 as a few folks said "hi" and the advice given was friendly and very useful to her.

An object lesson of how Randy would like to see all newcomers welcomed is my guess. @:-)
