BUH and AMS Stays

With all the people the are going to BUH because of this fare I thought it would be nice to start a thread so people can meet up. I'm currently scheduled for Nov 19-Nov 25 in BUH, but I'm thinking about taking the train through Bulgaria to Istanbul on that trip.

My second trip is a quick turn in BUH with May 13-May 19 in AMS. I'll probably plan on a hotel in Harlem.

Thanks to FourWheels for setting up a Yahoo Calendar. This will allow people to see the Budapest as well as other stopover points that we are doing.

Am doing 3-10 Aug '07 and have booked most of the stay at JW Marriott in Bucharest.

Anyone else around then, let's get together and swap war, or travel, stories.

aSiAnRiCk Oct 3, 2006 2:04 am

I'll be there from 02/13 until 02/17 ^

ozstamps Oct 3, 2006 6:20 am

Booked early March and early June RT's from Vancouver to Bucharest. 100% KLM metal too, that I can readily upgrade. :)

Oddly they are not "zero" rate error fares, and are fully flexible and fully cancellable.

2/24 YYZ - AMS
3/1 AMS - BUH
3/4 BUH - YYZ (5-hr lay over in AMS)

Julest Oct 3, 2006 7:48 am

here is my trip schedual over thanksgiving, if anyone wants to meet up :)

Sat, Nov 18 yyz-ams
Fri, Nov 24 ams- otp
Sat, Nov 25 otp-ams
Sat, Nov 25 ams- yyz

aSiAnRiCk Oct 3, 2006 10:15 am

Alright .. I modified my reservation a bit (actually it's my second reservation and I will cancel my first one :D )

2/11 YYZ-AMS
2/15 AMS-OTP
2/22 OTP-BCN
2/25 BCN-YYZ

I kinda regret spending 7 days in OTP as I noticed others only have one or two days layover there. However I like the train ride idea to Bulgaria, Turkey & Moldova.

LucWise Oct 3, 2006 12:24 pm

If I decide to stick with the trip, I'm in AMS from 12/10-16. Any tips on finding a decent hotel at a good price in AMS?

rockyp Oct 3, 2006 1:59 pm

I'll be in BUH for Nov 17 - Nov 22. Got in just under the wire on nwa.com this morning or I would've done a quicker turnaround in BUH. Anyway, the train ride to Istanbul sounds interesting. MCRT? You and I are there roughly at the same time. ;)

MastaHanky Oct 3, 2006 2:24 pm

Me and two friends are in for November 29th - December 5th.

chuckd Oct 3, 2006 6:58 pm

I'll be there Aug 12-18. Probably going to try to catch a flight somewhere else for at least half of that, probably 15, 16, and 17. BCN maybe. Or maybe train to some castles. No idea where I'm staying. Likely half Hilton, half hostels.

And here I thought I'm the only one who like staying at hostels on FT.

Beside it being cheap, it's a great way to meet other people when you're traveling alone.

JoeBagodonuts Oct 4, 2006 4:11 am

is there any chance that the OP in thread one can compile a listing by date/city/hotel of when FT'ers are going

but thanks for starting this thread :)

Gargoyle Oct 4, 2006 6:58 am

Apr. 1 - 6

I did backpack and hostel for a year. My pack has more miles than any other piece of gear.

Angeleno228 Oct 4, 2006 10:24 am

Arrive on 8/11/07 to Bucharest
For now, the plan is:
Spend 1 night in Bucharest
Take a flight or train on the 12th to Istanbul, Turkey
Return on 8/17/07 to Bucharest
Take flight on 8/18/07 back to YVR via AMS -- Have about a 6 hour layover in AMS.

Regards,
Angeleno228

For a family, it may be cheaper to stay in a hotel instead of hostel, since hostel usually charge you based on per person or the private room can cost pretty high.

However, if you're a single traveler like me, it really helps to stay in a hostel .. especially when you're looking for things to do and try to interact with fellow travelers without having to go to the bar.

Hostels are the best in AMS..http://www.flyingpig.nl/multimedia/newspaper4.10.shtml

I was originally thinking about doing that, but I realized that with all of the dates that people were getting it would quickly become very difficult to maintain. If it were just Nov and Dec, fine, but all the way til Sept...

As the thread grow I would use the thread search and find all of the posts with your month. If someone else want to compile a list I won't be offended. Does anyone know of a shared online calendar that we can all put our info on? Also try to post your info on Airtroductions. We might find some flights in common there.

Hi all,

For those that cannot find good hotel rates in Bucharest during their stay I'm recommending a company called RomVision (www.romvision.ro) which rents apartments throughout the city center for rates lower than the major hotels.
I have used them once and they've been great. I know the offer an airport or train station shuttle for 20EUR, and if you stay over x nights it's free. I stayed for 2 weeks and it was free. They have free hi-speed internet included, local phone calls included, maid service every 2 or 3 days, full kitchen, fridge (although I'm sure you're not going to BUH on vacation to cook :D), overall they were extremely helpful and great when I used them - this was in Jun-Jul of this year.

For those of you not planning to stay in Bucharest and that have train trips to nearby countries in mind, have a look at the offers from Rail Europe: www.raileurope.com and look for the Balkan FlexiPass (http://www.raileurope.com/us/rail/pa..._flexipass.htm)

I second this motion ^
I'll also (hopefully) be there during that time on my second ticket, if I can manage to take the time off ;)

FourWheels Oct 5, 2006 4:19 pm

I'd be happy to start a Yahoo calendar like the UA RCC meet-ups one. I'm away from home at the moment though. Will post a link if/when I've got it set up.

Marriotts in both BUH & AMS.

I would recommend the JW Marriott in Bucharest. When I was there in Nov 02 it was the most modern, brand-new looking hotel in the city! Maybe the best building in the city.

AMS has the Renaissance and Marriott, one is close to the Centraal Station, the other near the Leidseplein and Heineken museum. :D

If you are staying for a long period of time, Marriott has gift cards for $1k and $2k for 10% off using this link:

https://www.marriottgiftcardoffer.com/validate.aspx?m=

If you hop over to the Marriott forum, people have been saying that paying for your stay with a gift card is like paying with a Visa card, and could make for some lucrative points bonuses using Marriott's Fall megabonus promo:

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showt...4&page=1&pp=20

Enjoy both cities!

If I decided to stay in Romania for the whole week, I'm going to look into helping out with the local Red Cross or something for two or three days :D

Yes, we haven't. It would be great to meet your family.

I only have one trip booked and planned from this deal:

YVR-AMS AUG 14
AMS-LHR AUG 15

LHR-AMS AUG 25
AMS-BUH AUG 26
BUH-AMS AUG 26
AMS-YVR AUG 26

I planned for several days of stop-over at LHR. However, I intend to spend only about a couple of days in London. As for the rest, I will most likely be heading out somewhere, which currently is still too far ahead for me to predict ;) .

Best wishes to those heading out to Bucharest in the coming few months :) .

I thought it best to keep it simple, so I plugged in:

and in the Notes box: hotel

Let me know what you think. Suggestions welcome, but be kind. :p
