FlyerTalk Glossary for a newbie?
Is there a thread somewhere with all the common abbreviations used in the forum? I was kind of hoping for a guide to all the slang (BIS) and maybe a source for the city and airline codes?
What is ITA?
Anybody?
Thanks~

Hi WilsonK, welcome to Flyertalk
For the airport codes, go to the help menu - the second item is the airport codes, which tend to get over-used here! Acronym up!
This menu also has a glossary, guidelines and a new user guide . ^

WilsonK, welcome to FT! Just a few quick answers for you: BIS = actual miles you fly on a carrier by having your posterior (B) in the carrier's seat (IS); and not to be confused with total miles an airline offers elites because of bonuses added to the BIS miles. BIS miles are sometimes used to qualify for recognition levels (i.e., United Million-Mile status) or other promotions. ITA is a major booking software used for res/flight availability.
In addition to the great tips by other members, FT has a wonderful search feature in a menu both on the Help menu and in a menu below it that can answer more acronym Qs. Another tip: FT is a large site, reflective of our almost 100,000 members. Though it's natural to want to just jump in, take a little time to see how forums on FT are organized. That will help you locate info and share your travel experiences by going to the correct forum to read or post. Finally, the actual forums often have "sticky" threads at the tops of the forums that contain a treasure of info about the forum or the travel program featured there. Enjoy! Thanks everyone for the welcoming words. Love the site and have been lurking for a year or so and just recently began paying better attention and using some of the tips and advice for Amtrak trips.
Great community, had no idea it was so big!
Located the Glossary and now have everything I need to keep up with my normal reading of Flyer Talk posts into the wee hours of the morning......
Cheers!
