Time to move the social planning over from the Middle East Forum to Community...

Now that Sean and I are in BEY, and had a great dinner with BEYFlyer last week, and that meriem has arrived in town as well... we have the beginning of some regular events :)

So how about Wed 22 evening, we can meet in BCD say 8pm?

BEYFlyer Feb 14, 2006 6:57 am

I'll pencil it into my diary... Have your people call my people and we'll figure something out... And what kind of champagne are we having on the 22nd? And please, none of that cheap DP stuff!!!

Jimmy67 Feb 17, 2006 9:16 am

Ok...
so i have two options ....
March 17-21 or March 24-28

Via opodo there are some great rates for MEA: FRA-BEY-FRA just 200 € ( + tax & TSC)...
so saved enough for some brand new rayban sunglasses

which dates fit YOU guys better?

BEYFlyer Feb 17, 2006 9:34 am

I do have some guests flying in on the 16th for 5 days, but I will always find some time off for you guys. Otherwise, the 24th is just as good. Whatever is "cheaper" and whatever works better for you. Let's see what GK has to say since he is the one in and out of planes these days...

alex0683de Feb 17, 2006 2:56 pm

Hi everyone. I will be in Beirut from the 18th to the 25th or 26th of March. Let me know if you do get up to anything, I would love to join you if you don't mind.

Cheers,

Alex

Dovster Feb 17, 2006 10:08 pm

BEYFlyer, once again I will be unable to attend this meet. :(

As soon as our respective governments manage to work out the details, I will either drive up to Sidon to meet you or you can drive down to Nahariya.

That will probably be the happiest meet in the history of FlyerTalk!

Jimmy67 Feb 18, 2006 2:16 am

Welcome Alex!

Finally i am booked now to BEY from March 24-28 ( MEA 218/217)
You definitely shouldn't miss the saturday/sunday nights of Beirut. So I would recommend to fly out monday or tuesday. (Monday is usually my detox day hanging around with my moslem friends)

And never take these night flights:
One of the most frustrating things of my life was to leave a club in Beirut at 1.30 am , when the club is hieving and the mood fantastic and all the habibis are around you....

Sure you are welcome to join, for the pre-dinner cocktail , the dinner, the after-dinner drink, the pre-club lounging, the clubs, the after-partys and ...

Look forward to meeting you Alex ^ . We will be doing something for sure... A good dinner is always necessary if you want to keep up with Jimmy67 ;) :D ... Hey, if there is anything you need, please don't hesitate to PM me.

Hey Jimmy67, thanks for the advice. I'm actually pretty flexible as to when I leave Beirut since I will continue on to Syria by road and fly back to Europe from Damascus on April 3rd. That one is a day flight, thankfully, but on the inbound I got stuck on the LH flight that arrives at some 01:40 am or something like that. Unavoidable, sadly.

I look forward to meeting you in Beirut!

Thanks! I will be in Lebanon to visit a friend who has been interning in Beirut for the last four months, so I am reasonably set for local knowledge. I do look forward to meeting you though!

I'm hoping the same. And that I can be there when it happens.

My pleasure alex0683de. See you soon...

Brian_1 Feb 20, 2006 3:46 am

I have always wanted an excuse to visit BEY.

If you're planning to turn this into an official "do" then I would be very interested in attending.

B ;)

GK Feb 20, 2006 7:43 am

OK, sorry was out enjoying beautiful Lebanon this weekend, and trawling around lots of bars, so have been away from my PC for some time...great to see this thread onto page two already.

- first of all, yes I am here late march, so you all post your itins, and we'll stick some events (eg drinks and meals) into the calendar.

- secondly..any 'do' is official in my mind, regardless of how many attend.. so if others are reading this, and want to join in, then pipe up and post.. that's the point of this thread, an on-going social event...all welcome (just be ready for great food, alcohol, tiny smoke-filled venues and loud party people)

- more importantly, meriem and I are getting together Wed 22 in Solidere for a drink, so BEYFlyer can you make it 7.30 ish ? Call me to check where exactly we are.

cheers !

Well then, come on over... Just as GK mentioned, any gathering becomes official no matter how many of us attend. It seems we already have a good number of people for that weekend.

Hope to see you then. PM me if you have any questions.

Well, come on down! If I can drag myself all the way to Glasgow along a two-connection itinerary for a DO, you can come to Beirut (it will probably be easier!)... ;)

Traveloguy Feb 22, 2006 4:07 am

When are you guys thinking of hold this 'do'? I am sure that I could drag a certain other FTer along as well depending on our collective work requirements at the time.

Traveloguy Feb 22, 2006 4:09 am

Just realised that mid March is the suggested date which is when I am in HKG again.

Anyone up for a second 'Do'?

GK - It would be good to finally meet you!

GK Feb 22, 2006 5:04 am

well, just name the date when you can get here.. this thread is not specific to one event.. but ongoing

Jimmy67 Feb 22, 2006 10:04 am

I am there March 24-28, so is alex0683de.

I just think about which restaurant i fancy for sat 25th...
Hmmm , what about Zinc?
Asia ( roof top) would be nice too...

Well, BEYFlyer, where's hip to go in March?
Pre drink : Club Social is nice, or Torrino?

Actually, I'm there from the 18th to the 26th. Maybe a little longer, we'll see.

magic111 Feb 22, 2006 11:22 am

Seems to me that BEY is on the route between the Bali DO and the World Cup in Germany. :)

Have to spend a few days somewhere in the world the first week of June and it could just as easy be BEY as anywhere else.

Let me know within a week or so on whether you know if you guys are going to be around as I'm going to be attempting to book a oneworld award that encompasses both Bali and Germany with points in between.

BEYFlyer Feb 23, 2006 8:21 am

magic111 you are more than welcome here anytime you like. We should be around at that time...at least I know I will. June is the start of our glorious summer season and the wonderful tradition of just lounging around the pools of Beirut, drinking all kinds of stuff and enjoying the "views", so do stop over if you can.

Jimmy67 Feb 23, 2006 10:44 am

Yeahhh....

its like that magic111 !

GK Feb 23, 2006 11:46 am

magic111 you know you are always welcome to drop by.. we will be here. shame you'll miss sean's first art show (first two weeks of may)

anyhow.. BEYFlyer, sean and I had dinner last night and agreed the following..

Fri Mar 24 - kick off with Drinks at our new place, with light snacks, then off into the bars and clubs.. so bring duty free vodka.

Sat Mar 25 - dinner will be arranged somewhere suitably stylish.. just need to get a handle on numbers

In meantime, shall edit first post in this thread with these plans.

Imagine that shortly your home will look like our home: ie a gallery of the resident artist. So seems likely that it should be possible to see his works hanging.

Jerrie said to tell Sean that if he comes to the London DO the two of them can ditch all the ****** FTers and go on a photo shoot. :D

Will inform you of my transit dates (if possible on the award) next week after booking.

GK Feb 25, 2006 12:51 am

i think you need to bring jerrie to beirut.. the golden mediterranean light is fantastic. our new apartment is so large that one wing will be devoted to displaying sean's work ;)

Yes... Numbers... So far, I think we have the following FTers (and guests) in attendance:

GK + guest
BEYFlyer + guest(?)
Jimmy67 + guest
alex0683de + guest(?)

Possible:

meriem + guest(?)
Brian_1 + guest(?)

Have I missed anyone  ??? Anyone else planning on making this "DO"???

No guests for me, my friends are flying home on the 24th, though I am staying on in Beirut a little longer.

24th and 25th are marked on the agenda, just let us know the details once you have them.

Well I have been looking at flights and I'm starting to sweat at the thought of flying down the back on either BMed or MEA.

Although I did find a Club fare to LCA with BA and onwards with CY or ME in economy for about GBP500. Considering economy out of LHR is about GBP380, that routing might be an option.

I need to see if I can justify the expense as well as beg for time off work.

If anyone has any other imaginative routings they can think of, please let me know.

B ;)

I'm getting economy fares for LHR-FRA-BEY on LH for about 280 pounds. Books into W-Class, which gives you full miles on both BD and UA. C-Class is 927 pounds. Bookable at www.lufthansa.co.uk, with the flexibility set to +/- 3 days.

GK Feb 26, 2006 11:58 am

Travelocity is showing economy fare of GBP 250 (incl taxes etc) for AZ .. with 90 mins connection in MXP (both non schengen terminal) - if you can stomach the seat.. i wouldn't do it

I flew Alitalia three weeks and ago and honestly didn't think it was THAT bad. And for that price...

BEYFlyer Feb 27, 2006 2:47 am

The trick for flights to BEY is to book early. The longer you wait, the more expensive tickets will get. Granted this is a universal rule, but since Beirut is not "extensively" covered (other than through London and Paris), it will get a bit more expensive. Alitalia is a good option as they have an afternoon flight to BEY as well. Good luck with your travel planning and hope to see you in Beirut soon.

alex0683de Feb 27, 2006 9:11 am

Hi guys,

going a bit off-topic, does someone know the name of the border crossing on the main Beirut-Damascus highway? I need it for my Syrian visa application.

Thanks,

Alex

BEYFlyer Feb 28, 2006 6:24 am

Wish it was called something easier like "The border" or "The awesome crossing", but it is known as Massna'a and that is the main border crossing between the two countries.
