The restaurant confirmed that waits from near 5 till late are running 1.5 - 2 hours. A bud had dinner the other night and waited well over an hour he said, but he was drinking much beer as usual so I'm guessing his time was longer than he mentioned.

Therefore I am withdrawing from this Do as I refuse to wait for restaurants.
Sorry to all.

Sigh. I'll catch up with you all someday.

Someone needs to check the TOS. Can one withdraw from his own do? :D

I certainly don't blame you, for I would do the same thing.

It's funny - if I would say this, I'm sure the reaction would be  or :td: or something like iluv is being his typical princess-pillows self.

At least someone can get away with it. ^

No problem Willie -- I'm going to have to bail on it too as I'll now be in far far hinterlands that afternoon and wouldn't make it back into the city on time

Berghoff Auction

Berghoff is having an auction at the restaurant on March 4. There's some pretty cool pictures of old Chicago being offered. You have to sign up in advance. You can see the items up for auction in this post:

Berghoff update:

From today's (April 19) TRIBUNE. If you want to mess with registering, you can read the whole thing online at www.chicagotribune.com:

Berghoff quietly reopens

"Downtown Chicago's historic Berghoff restaurant is back. More or less. The new Berghoff Cafe opened quietly Tuesday, serving the same menu of German favorites as the 107-year-old restaurant that closed in February. Some customers say what's missing is..."

Looks like part of the motivation might have been to jettison the unionized waiters and staff.

Sounds like a good plan to me.

Is it a good plan because the waiters were surly, or just because you don't like unions?

The latter. Berghoff waiters were always pleasant, helpful, and professional in my experience.

Unions have cost me time and trouble most every time I encounter them. Bad problems with shows in the Chicago area, which of course is why many exhibitions are moving to Las Vegas, Orlando, etc.

"Plug in a lamp in your booth? Why, certainly, I'll have to call the electrician. He'll be here in three hours. Please fill out this form and leave a check for $56, for a minimum half-hour at $112 an hour, with Exhibition Services."

Hi.. got into this late, but I am using my 100th post, so its important to me.

I've only been to CHItown twice, but went two times to that delightful German restaurant... I see from posts that it closed, but also reopened...

Can someone tell me what happened.. they closed and opened under new management, etc...

I'm somewhat new to FT, but looking forward to a great meal there, if possible, and more cheesebourghers, cheeserbourgers! ^
