12 Days Buzz and FAQs

While you're keeping one eye on the 12 Days of Christmas sticky thread, you can post any questions and/or comments you might have about the contest here.

Good luck and Happy Holidays to everyone.

Looks like an exciting contest! ^

One thing I didn't see (maybe I overlooked it) was, what program are these miles in? Do we get our choice? Is there a list of miles/points programs to choose from if one is so lucky as to win?

Kiwi Flyer Dec 8, 2005 5:56 pm

Feeling lucky Kathy?

That's one benefit of being an FT addict.

Good question ... looks like we neglected to mention that part.

We have now rectified that situation though by adding the following paragraph to the contest rules:

"And these aren't just any miles, they are magic holiday miles. They can be added into any account you wish -- if you wish hard enough (all right, this is starting to sound more like a Peter Pan promotion than a holiday promotion, but you get the idea). Just tell us the program you want to add them into and we will figure out a way to get them there (that's sort of our specialty :P )."

Happy Holidays.

Wonderful! So, one could even get Starwood points, for example? Or is that pushing it? ;)

Traveller Dec 9, 2005 6:52 pm

Hmmmm... it sounds like 12 Days is really Canarsie. Do we get any extra miles for guessing something like that? :)

Sure. They should give you 2,000, to round out the total prizes to 100,000 miles! ;)

obscure2k Dec 9, 2005 6:59 pm

Hmmm, I am already Premium, signed on to Chat, just finished writing a hotel review, now I have to figure out the wiki thing  Otherwise, I am good to go.

Premium is absolutely fantastic. So I have it. Also recently subbed to InsideFlyer.com. Then discovered I already had an InsideFlyer.com account. Today I discovered InsideFlyer accounts GIVE you FT Premium.

Damn! All this for $36 a year. I'm happy. :)

Kiwi Flyer Dec 9, 2005 7:58 pm

Hey seeing FTers drop into chat post hi and drop out. You can stay longer ya know?

If 12 Days were Canarsie, what would we have:

On the first day of Christmas, Canarsie gave to us _________________

I dropped in yesterday and no one was home :( I was really up for a good chat.

???

I assure you that not only am I not 12 Days, but I do not know the actual identity of 12 Days — although I have a few guesses in mind.

This in itself would make a good contest — who is 12 Days?

SkiAdcock Dec 10, 2005 5:06 pm

Well chat is normally active from 7pm-midnight Pacific Time (give or take an hour on each side). I couldn't figure out why folk who had never been seen before - or hadn't been seen in years - were suddenly on (briefly) until I figured out it was related to the contest.

I've done chat, review, & am premium, and I'm w/ obscure2k - I need to figure out the wiki thing & everyone knows I'm not a techie...

Cheers.

obscure2k Dec 11, 2005 9:58 pm

Sharon-- I finally did the "wiki" thing. Go to the sandbox. Now, have completed all tasks. Phew! That was tough!

SkiAdcock Dec 12, 2005 11:03 am

obscure2k, i went to sandbox today & even then felt like a total moron trying to figure it out/not getting it. However, I think I did one post. It shows up under Mileage Plus Summary. Cheers.

skofarrell Dec 12, 2005 12:59 pm

First two days, and it looks like two members were chosen that have never posted. Hopefully we won't do the entire 12 days with semi-inactive accounts! :)

JulieAA Dec 12, 2005 1:06 pm

I've read through the Wiki, but I don't find anything that I could add that is new or different. :(

I enjoyed chat. I'll have to get back into it, but it's usually late at night when I have the time.

I dont think I would mind, as long as I am chosen on the 12th day :D

SanDiego1K Dec 12, 2005 1:39 pm

All I know is that since we have 80K registered members - and only 12 names are being drawn - is that my chance of being one is - oh, slim to none.

Mary2e Dec 12, 2005 1:58 pm

While there are over 80k members - I wonder how many of those have never posted, or posted once only to disappear.

It would be a shame for a non-contributing member to FT to somehow get wind that he's the winner of miles and claim the prize.

I'd venture to say that there are a couple hundred premium members, so that significantly cuts down the numbers on my side.

I edited the NW Wiki article :) that puts me really into the think of it.

Also logged into chat, but no one was around. :(

I maximized my chances.. should write a review about Rei do Gado ^

SkiAdcock Dec 12, 2005 2:03 pm

Hmm, I 'think' I posted in the wiki - suddenly it's listed in the MP section but underneath what's publicly posted w/ a bullet point - no separate url/link that I can tell. Maybe I'll email 12days to find out if the Sandbox was too complicated for my feeble brain...

Cheers.

SanDiego1K Dec 12, 2005 2:38 pm

Sharon, you can look in the "history" section to see who has posted. For example, clicking the link on "Flying United", I find the 3 most recent posters are:

# (cur) (last) 02:32, 12 Dec 2005 GoingAway
# (cur) (last) 21:22, 11 Dec 2005 Bdjohns1
# (cur) (last) 23:22, 8 Dec 2005 Izzik

When I click "history" for Mileage Plus Program Basics, I find:

# (cur) (last) 18:05, 12 Dec 2005 216.229.35.69 (→Mileage Statement)
# (cur) (last) 18:05, 12 Dec 2005 216.229.35.69 (→Mileage Statement)
# (cur) (last) 17:52, 12 Dec 2005 207.200.116.70 (→Mileage Statement)

I have no idea what the IP addresses mean, as there are also a number of handles shown who have posted.

Kiwi Flyer Dec 12, 2005 2:40 pm

I think the IP addresses are shown when someone edited without logging in.

I'm glad I wasn't chosen on Day One then. I was too distracted by the count-down to five million FlyerTalk posts. :o

I played in the FT Wiki Sandbox with a tidbit about UA's former service to SPN. When I signed onto FT Chat a couple of days ago at 19:00 P.S.T., no one was home in the Buzz! room. Are there private rooms? SoreAss signed on just as it was time for me to eat my lunch, so I promptly signed off (with an explanation).

I still need to do a review. I expect there aren't too many about Saipan locales.

We have our first winner tj41, and now on day 4 yet another member with no posts is drawn :(

Mary2e Dec 14, 2005 1:53 pm

IMHO I think that's going to happen ALOT - remember the IPOD mess? LOTs of people signed up and posted once - only.

SkiAdcock Dec 14, 2005 3:01 pm

tj41 posted in a dif thread that he reads a lot but posts rarely. Maybe now that he's won that will change. I know a lot of lurkers - not all are nuts enough to go to 6K posts like some of us :D And it's Xmas season - I'm not going to rain on anyone's parade/resent them for winning. Given there are 80K members, not all post on a regular basis & the choosing is random - odds are more frequent that a non-heavy postwise person will win. Cheers.

GoingAway Dec 16, 2005 11:28 am

Agree that there will be lots of winners with few or no posts. If you look at the average post count across all registered users, I'm sure it's fairly low. Maybe they'll do this next year with some sort of "registration" process, e.g. if you voted in the talkboard elections to narrow the field a little bit and encourage more participation.

Happy Holidays!!

SkiAdcock Dec 16, 2005 11:36 am

Or they could say you need 100 posts or 10 posts in the last 3 mths. So it adds some posting to the criteria but isn't too onorous.

Happy Holidays - ho, ho, ho - hm, where's the eggnog???

GregWTravels Dec 16, 2005 11:52 am

For someone with very few posts, I say that we let the people with very few posts win! Of course, I might be baised.

Besides, from a loyalty perspective, the point of the contest is to get people to read the board who might not normally, thus improving the number of impressions and increasing advertising rates. They don't need to get posts with 1,000+ posts to come back with contests, you guys are already addicted. ;)

You are incorrect . The odds are 50/50.

Either you win or you lose. :p

I don't post as much as many people here, and it took me a while to post at all, so I understand your point of view.

However, at this point it seems like approximately 50% of the names are people who haven't posted at all . So while that makes the jackpot roll forward, it doesn't seem to do much for loyalty, impressions or advertising rates.

I don't think that there should be a mimimum (ten, 100, vote in elections -- tho' that's an interesting thought), but I do feel that if you haven't posted at all then you shouldn't really be able to win what are becoming substantial prizes.

Mary2e Dec 16, 2005 1:14 pm

That's the point I was trying to make. I have no problem with low post count winners, it the no post count winners that I'm commenting about.

The prize now is quite substantial, though it's not likely the person would win the bonuses, however, even without them, it's an awful lot of points to give to someone who has contributed nothing.
