On the 6th day of Christmas, FT chose for me: Another "empty" UserID! :)

Traveller Dec 16, 2005 7:06 pm

I tried looking for this last night and was tired and couldn't find it... How do you see that a person has zero posts? It's not like I can click on their name in a post and see all their posts since they have zero.

Kiwi Flyer Dec 16, 2005 7:09 pm

Do an advanced search on the username. (Click on search, then advanced search.)

Traveller Dec 16, 2005 7:50 pm

Thanks.... only TJ29 and StarAllianceGold have ever posted.... it stands to reason that many more people join FT and don't post than those that join and do post... I guess I'm in the camp that thinks that if you have zero posts, you shouldn't be in the contest.. but then that can make a larger pot for someone to eventually win at the end of the contest.

ozstamps Dec 16, 2005 8:00 pm

If the rules were that the only winners were folks who had posted on FT in the past 7 days it would have driven up FT traffic a LOT. ;)

Surely that is the core idea behind this?

SkiAdcock Dec 17, 2005 1:44 am

Hmm, how does one value a person's contribution? By # of post counts - good grief, we've got plenty of folk who have a ton of posts but a # of fters would question the 'value' of some of those posts - and that's true of both old-timers as well as newbies.

Now in fairness I'm not going to be a big contributor to the wiki, but that's cuz I just don't get the thing (sigh), vs stopping by for 30 seconds or making some artificial count. Kinda like chat - there have been newbies & old-timers who have stopped by recently for the token 30 seconds due to the contest but didn't add much - maybe they didn't get it, maybe they just wanted to hit a # or criteria in this case.

BTW - I know I frequently take the 'get over it' view but I'm gonna do that again. I view this drawing kinda like an idine thing - unexpected but nice points if I get them. Well I should say my view of idine - I know others go out of their way on it.

I already had posted reviews, have been on chat, & am a Premium whatever that thing is, so wiki is the only extra step I went through (and it was so frustrating I almost didn't finish it, but that's me). Would I like to be chosen? Yes, hence the going through the steps. Do I expect to be chosen? Absolutely not. But hoping is part of the fun. :)

And I truly don't understand all the bent out of shape & I'm 'entitled' cuz I've posted a lot thought process. It's a fun contest - no more than that - that 12 Days is willing to fund to get folk to some parts of FT that may not normally get traffic (and like any good marketer is willing to put a carrot which us mileage-craving folk will go after).

But a few things...

First, it's 12Days (presumably Randy)'s playbox - he gets to make the rules & for this year, these were the rules - and it didn't require posts. So I guess my thought is why grumble - but if you're gonna grumble grumble against Randy (and preferably via PM), not the folk who had their handles chosen.

Second, if you all are actually checking people who have been chosen for their 'post count' you have too much time on your hands ;) . It would never occur to me to actually do a search to find someone's post count who won something.

Finally gang, I know a lot of you & like you, but it's the holiday season. Don't be Scrooges! Just enjoy it all. If you win, consider it an op-upgrade - unexpected but delightful if it happens. :)

Cheers.

It takes less that 10 seconds to see if the user chosen is active or not.

The way the contest is structured is fine, as the "milepost winners" are drawn from the active user pool. I just think it would be more fun if every name chosen was active, but it is fine either way.

This in itself would make a good contest — who is 12 Days?

At least MrLimo is an active , and old time Flyertalker. He even gave me a Long Beach reality tour a couple of years ago. :o

That must be a vBulletin bug. I know Mikel and there is no way he's working on the weekend. :p

stimpy Dec 18, 2005 1:44 pm

Way 2 go Mrlimo! He definitely deserves a Flyertalk prize.

SanDiego1K Dec 18, 2005 4:11 pm

Very cool to see MRLIMO win! He was active on FT when I joined 5 years ago. I remember a lot of posts about hospitality in various airline club lounges, before 9-11 made most of that impossible.

Traveller Dec 19, 2005 1:18 pm

gjriley - another 0 count poster. More miles for me to win tomorrow. :D ^

Hmm... I wonder if we should take bets on today's.

SPN Lifer Dec 21, 2005 5:27 am

I've noticed some system problems with FlyerTalk access. That's one way to keep out the newbies!

abelscc Dec 22, 2005 3:22 pm

I have a question about the extra bonus miles from the Wiki, Chat, Premium and Reviews for a total of 20,000 miles. So far there has been only three winners and none have been able to pick up the bonus miles.

If the 12th name is not eligible for the bonus miles then they were to go to the latest eligible winner. If there was no eligible winner that qualified for the bonus miles, how will you give them away? This looks like it will be a real possibility. dawn

izzik Dec 22, 2005 3:38 pm

Any leftover miles will be awarded to the Flyertalk handle with the least amount of time spent online.

Traveller Dec 22, 2005 7:05 pm

Looks like you will lose then izzik.... probably me too.. :D .. the 12th day poster picked is also a zero count poster.

obscure2k Dec 23, 2005 3:20 pm

Congratulations to MilesToGoBeforeISleep. Lucky winner of 65,000 miles. Way to go ^

Traveller Dec 23, 2005 7:43 pm

This was a fun contest, thanks to FT for holding it! ^

And congrats to the winners!

Agreed! :) ^

A suggestion for next year: Since all the miles will be given away anyways, why not make the contest require registration, so only those that are active FTers, and are paying attention, will get chosen.

paradocs Dec 24, 2005 10:23 am

Really good idea! ^

How to Play a Fun and Fair Game: YES! Registration Required!

I second the motion! :D

SPN Lifer Dec 27, 2005 2:02 am

But this would be counter-productive to one of the purposes implied in the pop-up, to increase holiday viewership.

FlyerTalk is about good deals, yes, but it is also about sharing.
