As I have 7 hr to get from OAK to SFO, would anyone be
interested in meeting for a bite to eat somewhere between
the two airports?

Cheers,
ML

Are you up to coming out to Walnut Creek on BART (I'd pick you up there)? I have a flight that night to requalify for EXP at 0030 SFO-PHL, and could drop you off at SFO just before your departure, and then just wait around for mine.

Thinking of Pyramid Alehouse where I had dinner last month.

magic111 Nov 21, 2005 10:34 am

Should be able to make the dinner depending on where/when my fixture is that afternoon.

If you decide on the where I should be able to raise the possiblity immensely.

work2fly Nov 21, 2005 11:00 am

Pyramid Alehouse is an excellent choice! The food is pretty good and the Snowcap Ale is my favorite of their seasonal brews.

Unfortunately, I can't make Walnut Creek these days as I'm now working in Palo Alto. Have fun and let's try to catch up the next time you're in town!!

KathyWdrf Nov 21, 2005 4:32 pm

I might be able to make this. I realize that tom911 is making a nice offer to shuttle violist from Walnut Creek to SFO in his car, but Walnut Creek is a bit out of the way for some of us.

Couldn't we do dinner at a more central location? How about someplace near SFO? Lots of possibilities there! ;)

RichardInSF Nov 21, 2005 5:34 pm

Tuesday night is tough for me for get to the City (and definitely not Walnut Creek!), but might be possible if it was around SFO. Work2fly, we're in Palo Alto too so ridesharing could work in that case.

violist Nov 21, 2005 8:38 pm

I haven't seen tom911 in quite a while, and I would certainly
like to be able to accommodate his schedule. Is there any
location you would find agreeable closer to the airport,
perhaps for a late supper? Then we could perhaps also
fit in the Palo Alto and downtown people. Magic, would
you be willing to travel that far?

kluau88 Nov 21, 2005 8:55 pm

I could meet up somewhere in SF if that's where this ends up. Will check the thread for further details.

tom911 Nov 21, 2005 9:52 pm

I could do something around SFO if it's after evening commute. I'm not up on restaurants down there, so I'd defer to someone in that direction for a choice and best time. Would still drive down and could shuttle Violist to SFO afterwards.

RichardInSF Nov 22, 2005 4:51 pm

The standard place we seem to end up at near SFO is Max's in Burlingame.

Haven't been to Gulliver's house of prime rib in a long time (I think it's still there) but not a viable option if there are any vegetarians!

work2fly Nov 22, 2005 5:27 pm

Max's is good.

There's also the Steelhead Brewery in Burlingame that's pretty comparable to Tom's initial suggestion of Pyramid. Beers aren't quite as good but the food's better...

RichardInSF Nov 22, 2005 6:33 pm

Cool, never tried it. A few times before we've tried this kind of place and found it was out of business -- but according to their web page, this one still exists. They only take bookings for groups of 12 or more, don't suppose we could get to that size?

Food is served until 10pm on Tue-Thurs.

VPescado Nov 22, 2005 6:40 pm

I am up for it. Max's is ok in my opinion. I went to Gulliver's a month or two ago and it has not aged well IMHO. Fook Yoon is an FT favorite, but some FT'ers might be getting tired of it.

I'd also suggest The Fish Market in San Mateo. It is pretty convenient to SFO, the South Bay, and the East Bay (especially if you are taking the San Mateo Bridge - which would be wise if you want to avoid the rush hour jam on the Bay Bridge). We have had at least one FT do here in the past (Ozstamps and Joh), and folks seeed to like it.

I can also volunteer to take folks to SFO, Bart, or Caltrain. (as well as provide rides from Caltrain).

I looked at their web site and the menu should cover a wide variety of tastes. That would work fine for me, and being so close to SFO is an extra.

I'm off to New York City Wed-Thurs-Fri and don't expect to have internet access, so I'll go with whatever is decided in my absence.

mahasamatman Nov 22, 2005 8:29 pm

Anywhere downtown works for me for lunch or dinner. That would be far more interesting for a visitor than Burlingame...

The big problems for SF is that it is very painful for non-SF folks (i.e. East bay folks like tom911, and peninsula folks like myself, work2fly, and richard) to get into the city at rush hour - and depending on the neighborhood, finding parking can be an adventure - then again the same is true in downtown burlingame.

In any case, I think we should leave it to Michael to choose, since he is the honored guest.

Michael, I'll endeavor to make it no matter where you choose (Within Alameda, San Mateo, and San Francisco Counties and accessable by road from SFO :) ).

Wireless Nov 22, 2005 10:46 pm

I'd shoot up to the peninsula to see violist, unfortunately I'll be in SEA on business :(

magic111 Nov 22, 2005 11:31 pm

Since I'm the only one living in the North Bay my vote doesn't appear to be worth much but the only time I go to the airport area is either a weekend or to catch a flight.

East Bay or the city is my vote with preference for the first.

violist Nov 23, 2005 8:18 am

From a logistical standpoint, Steelhead in Burlingame right by
the Caltrain station looks good.

We have substantial interest from outside the city, and
in any case there are plenty of trains out of San Fran (for
example, southbound 6:27 to 7 and 7:20 to 7:48).

As I want to be back at the airport by, say, 10:15, let's say:

7:15-ish at the Steelhead, 333 California Dr., Burlingame.
Heavy drinkers may wish to show up early or leave late!

Magic, let's talk by e-mail - perhaps we can have a pre-event
event in the East Bay with tom911.

I'm an East Bay person. The first rule of SF is never drive into SF. Parking is free at all BART stations after 3:00 and it's far less stressful. It's a bit more difficult from the Peninsula, but CalTrain is pretty reliable (I often take it from SF to San Jose).

I'll see if I can make the dinner in Burlingame - it'll depend on the timing of the trains and buses.

RichardInSF Nov 23, 2005 10:15 pm

I can do Steelhead, me+1, next Tuesday -- violist, can you start a list in the first post, and also indicate the place and time? If we hit 12 (or get close), we can even book!

jaylenofan86 Nov 24, 2005 12:12 am

Count me in! Nice to see all of you again before my crazy 3 roundtrips that weekend!

sf4dfish Nov 24, 2005 6:15 pm

Wish I could join you again, unfortunately, I am flying to Brazil on the morning of the 29th.

violist Nov 25, 2005 3:56 pm

Sorry to miss Bing and Andrew (also Jim, if in fact we can't get together).

RichardInSF Nov 27, 2005 10:17 pm

bump! coming soon!

squeakr Nov 28, 2005 4:37 pm

can I be a dork for a minute?

(OK I probably am a dork ALL THE TIME but)
sorry to miss this one.

(rest of post edited as it will most likely be misunderstood)

hope to catch some at another time.

I was just gonna say yes, count me in, I can take bus and bart in to the city, California street. Then I read the rest of the thread and realized it's NOT in SF (where there is a California St.)

Bus & Bart from the east bay is sort of a pain. Taking CalTrain in addition is too much. Sorry. :(

You may want to edit the first post to include the town "Burlingame".

mahasamatman Nov 28, 2005 11:04 pm

I have to turn my maybe into a no. All hell (OK, maybe just part of it) broke loose at work today, so it'll be a late night tomorrow.

Have fun!

It's close - it does say SFO and not SF. And SFO is close enough to Burlingame to consider them the same place.

Dinner with Michael is worth it. TravelKhatt and I have literally driven hours to dine with him. On the other hand we are insane.

work2fly Nov 29, 2005 9:37 am

Hell's broke loose at work for me too.

I doubt I will make it by 7:15, however I'm going to try to leave Palo Alto by 7 so that I should be there by 7:45.

Would someone save a seat for me?

jaylenofan86 Nov 29, 2005 12:22 pm

Is there any parking over there? Or should I take BART over since I'm coming from Sacramento and maybe someone can pick me up?

tom911 Nov 29, 2005 12:38 pm

There should be parking within a block or two. We've done events in Burlingame before and it hasn't been a problem. The city maintains some free parking lots, too.

Be careful after you cross the Bay Bridge. The lanes have changed when you come out on the San Francisco side and have to connect to 101, and it can be a challenge. My brother drove down on Friday and ended up downtown instead of on 101 towards SFO.

Thanks Tom! Looks like I'll drive in then! See you all tonight!

We're coming from Palo Alto also but I am picking up my GF at Stanford at 6:30.
Will hold space for you, take your time. For future DOs, maybe we ought to all go together!

party_boy Nov 29, 2005 2:21 pm

I'll try to make it.

tom911 Nov 29, 2005 6:59 pm

Myself and Violist are slowly approaching Burlingame. We're at the Barnes and Noble in San Mateo, and will hit the road from here in about 45 mins. See everyone shortly :)
