New-FTers, addicted?

I stumbled across this site back in early March I think, I don't remember how, but I did. I joined and began lurking. I didn't know what I could contribute, so I didn't post. I am getting close to 100 posts now, the first milestone (at a decent clip too, pretty much all in the past 8 days I think, needless to say, better than when I first started).

I was wondering if anyone else was addicted to FT right off the bat (I am sure you were)?

At first I rationed it. If it was a beautiful day outside, I would tell myself that I was being crazy for not enjoying the weather. But now, I just stay up very late.

In the past 7-10 days, I have gone to bed at night probably 5-7 times. Otherwise, I am on FT until at least 4 AM. I pretty much know the Nick at Nite schedule by heart now, and now what channel to turn to at what time (leave the TV on at my desk here of course), and just read, read, post, read, read.

I love it, but I can't keep doing this, please help me.

Sincerely,
Scott in Nashville

I would say that many members have some level of addiction to FT. There are many forums that will gain the attention of each member. Of course, there is Omni where non-travelers can gain great addiction. FT is truly a community in itself. ^

I have checked FlyerTalk daily for almost seven years. Is that an addiction?

The best part about FlyerTalk is that is a wonderful way to make friends all around the world. That has truly enriched our lives.

zrudeboyz - only serious losers spend any time on this board. ;)

Welcome to FT. ^

How many times a day? :p

Some of us check FT regularly. Anyone have a definition of regularly? :D

Must...stop...reading...FT online...shutting down computer...hiding power cord...cutting off surge protector...cutting off room electricity...cutting internet cable...smashing wireless router...gahhhhh I'm still on FT ;)

techgirl Apr 30, 2005 11:42 am

It is addictive. I actually once "blocked" FT on my computer during a work deadline so I couldn't kill time (aka procrastinate) by surfing FT.

Its a great community - and chat/surfing trip reports has gotten me through many a boring night in a nowhere hotel when I was out of reading material and nothing was good on tv.

This is sounding like a Kellogg’s ® All-Bran ® commerical. ;)

just read, read, post, read, read.
So you haven't found FT Chat yet?

Who needs sleep anyway :D

I'm so glad I don't know how to do that, otherwise I'd have to block it, too. Here I am reading FT instead of studying for my Education Law final exam. The book is open, the highlighter is between my teeth... but FT has me in its clutches and won't let me go. (Yes, that's it, I'll place the blame elsewhere. It's FT's fault!) :)

Shiloh Apr 30, 2005 5:00 pm

HAHAHA I even asked if they could remove my name and password recently-bc the drawl of knowing I could post was really getting in the way of studying and work!!

well as you can see they dont like to do that...I am working on the self control thing concerning FT! :)

I joined FT a year or so ago and recently got really into reading the forums and trying to learn all I can about the travel market and how to maximize my travel (miles, points, fun, whatever!)

I have only been to one DO, the one in San Antonio which was awesome!!, and loved meeting all of the really cool people! I can honestly say that I cannot wait to see them again!

Corey, in Austin, TX!

PS - I travel to BNA all the time for work; I used to live there for 5 years until moving here. Nice city but I prefer AUS!

PPS - Oh and yea, I am so very addicted that its ridiculous! FT is the first thing I read when I wake up, first thing I read when I get in from work, and last thing I read before bed!

entropy Apr 30, 2005 11:39 pm

definately addicted

paradocs May 1, 2005 1:37 am

Corey78: you are so cute! All of us at the SAT DO just loved your enthusiasm! Glad you have caught the addiction! Can't wait to see you again!

MileageAddict May 1, 2005 6:45 am

Addicted? Yup. I check FT before email every morning.

frequentfoulup May 1, 2005 6:29 pm

Yes, totally addicted and totally new. The first time I found this site I spent 4 or 5 hours going over very old posts. It was awsome! My regret is that I have been a high miler for 20 years, but just discovered FT this year.

SQFAN May 2, 2005 5:51 am

Definitely addicted.

Need to have it 3 times a day :D

The wealth of knowledge is incredible. Now, just how can I get some more of those elite miles ... :)

I was watching that show "Intervention" on A&E last night and there was a guy addicted to video games and the first thing that entered my mind was this thread!!!

If someone can be that addicted to video games and have to go thru intervention and rehab-I know there are some FTs that probably need to go for this website! ;)

I definitely am addicted to FT. I check the KLM and LH fora everyday. Sometimes I even check another time in the evening just to make sure I´m not missing any great offers from the Mileage Run forum. I´ve been reading the same fora for quite a while and that made me wonder how on earth is it possible that some of you here have thousands of posts? Well, the reason seems to be that you also write into these community and OMNI pages, which have been almost ignored by me. Maybe I´ll start writing here as well. ;)

Well, at least you have your priorities straight! Over Flyertalk dinners, you insist on discussing "the law!" ;)

zrudeboyz May 2, 2005 7:40 pm

I still get by on self-discipline. This weekend, my network was down for two days, it was actually nice not feel addicted for a while. I got some well needed rest.

meducate May 3, 2005 5:01 am

I feel the same way as the OP; having found FT only recently, I have found myself checking it often. In addition, with automatic email notification, I notice a lot more responses to threads that I have posted on popping up on my Blackberry--not close to the number of regular emails that I get, but certainly enough to make me realize I am spending a lot of time posting!

Funny how you feel like you "know" people already, just by the tone and content of their posts.

I guess it is true what they say, birds of a feather....fly together... :D

It is interesting, isn't it. Over the past seven years on FT, I have met, in real life, literally hundreds of FlyerTalkers--some of whom have become very dear friends. They always turn out to be pretty much exactly like I had envisioned they would be.

Somehow meeting "on line" breaks down some barriers and creates greater intimacy than meeting in real life. Odd, but true.

This year, thanks to FT, we will be visiting two new countries--Australia and Israel. Last year it was Italy, Switzerland, Lichtenstein, and Hong Kong. Little by little, out FlyerTalk friends tempt us to explore more and more of this big blue marble. :)

Interestingly, I had the opportunity to meet a few FTers for the first time, and although I had no pre-conceived notions, they turned out to be just terrific! But I do envision some folks, just based on their posts...and some have terrific names that make me WANT to know what they are really like...

[QUOTE=TakeMeToEZE] Here I am reading FT instead of studying for my Education Law final exam. [/QUOTE

I really didnt realize "how" bad it was until someone asked to borrow some of my lecture notes for our history final.

The lady that borrowed them came back and asked what do my abbreviations as ORD, LAX, ISP, etc etc meant....and it didn't help I had thrown in med term abbreviations!! :p

Well tell her that in med term, ORD could be oncologic radiation daily, LAX is short for laxative (ain't that the truth), and ISP is isotonic solution powder..... :D

Was it the lobster, or was it Bonnie Hunt? ;) (We thought you were terrific too -- come back to Cgo soon!)

Well, Bonnie was a hottie, but it was the way that you knew just how to pet the lobster that made the night for me  ;)

I'll be in Chicago briefly in 2 weeks, for one night...but all tied up until very late....

Depending on how work is going, I sometimes check FT hourly. Especially if I have a lot of conference calls where reading FT helps keep me from falling asleep.

flygirl555 May 3, 2005 7:06 am

Addicted...absolutely! (hence the sunglasses to cover my bloodshot eyes).

Is there a FT rehab program yet? If so, how many FF and MQM's do we get for travel, hotel, car rental, program registration on our credit card, etc.? Enough to obtain priority status? :D

That would almost gurantee her never asking to borrow them again.

she had a hard enough time w/ the airport codes & EASY EASY med abbreviations..I felt sorry for her and explained them all..

hhmm I will keep the others in mind for the ones who dont ever show wanting my notes!! :D

No problem, it only took me 30 seconds to make those up! :D Tell her I'm available for tutoring.... ;)

Will do, and we have to aim for some more, er, stroking...

I have learned so much from this board the past few months, contributing greatly to my addiction! My honey is understanding, however, as the great info has led to his attaining his very first airline status this year. Good stuff.

Incidentally, noticing Corey78's post on the first page of this thread, I am also in Austin and also lived in BNA before moving here (and agree that I like AUS even better!) How bout that?
