SIN 2 May

Ok, so it's seven hours on the ground at my "Destination." In the middle of the night.

How many other insane people, err, fine FlyerTalk compatriots are also doing this mileage run? I'm arriving 23:45 local time on the 2nd. I've never been to Singapore, but at least I'll get to see the airport this trip.

Akira Apr 22, 2005 12:47 am

I'll be pretty much on the same flights as you.

3-1-2005
UA6444 SLC-SFO
UA853 SFO-NRT
3-2
UA837 NRT-SIN
3-3
UA838 SIN-NRT
UA852 NRT-SFO
UA548 SFO-SLC

So I guess you are on a different flight out of NRT on the 3rd. Maybe we can meet up during the long 7 hours. I just tried booking for the transit hotel but they are all booked for that time. I replied back asking for a waitlist. I'll see what happens. Anyway, maybe we can buddy up to head downtown or East Side for some food? It will be my first time in SIN also.

I have been a long time lurker, and this will be my first mileage run to attain 1K. I am still going to college so this will be a great feat!

Cheers,
Tom

Just changed it. I just noticed the same thing. Thanks.

Akira Apr 22, 2005 1:04 am

We are nuts! I am just thinking about how we are going to be sitting in coach for pretty much 2 full days and seeing SIN (a place I never been) for 5-6 hours...all for miles.

When I first read about mileage runs, I really thought that it was just rediculous-people flying just for miles? But more days and weeks reading flyertalk.com, I am addicted to checking fares and looking for mileage runs. ;)

bseller Apr 22, 2005 9:00 am

Wish I could join you guys!!! But alas, I'm going to arrive SIN on Saturday May 7 (midnite) and leave on Monday, May 9.....This one'll put me over the hump for 1K, but it would be fun to have a few chilli crabs if anyone is going to stay a "touch" longer!!

Best wishes, Dave

Lots of Redtail Flyers in SIN

I will be doing about the same thing, except on NW (arrive 1:20 AM on May3). My MR is LGA-MSP-HNL-NRT-SIN-NRT-HNL-MSP-LGA.

There will be several NW FTers in SIN and NRT on and around the same dates. Check out this thread $400 Fares to Asia on NW BostonBali has put together a handy spreadsheet with all of our flight info which you may find helpful. I believe that on May 2 there will be at least 19 of us passing through the WC in NRT.

And yes, we are all certifiable for doing this mileage run

I will be in the SFO RCC before the flight, fat chick travelling alone. Real name Andrea. Although when a critical mass of FlyerTalkers assemble in an airline club, there is some strange gravitational force and we manage to locate each other and form a spontaneous party.

I'm all ready, I've got some pocket money and a new pair of Airport Shoes! (My last Birkenstock clogs died and I've been avoiding replacing them. I do *not* recommend Doc Martins as a substitute.)

AIR> May 1 UA # 853 SFO --> NRT 13:35 16:30 (Next day)
AIR> May 1 UA # 837 NRT --> SIN 17:55 (Next day) 23:45 (Next day)
AIR> May 3 UA # 838 SIN --> NRT --> SFO 7:20 15:20 17:55 11:05

I tried to send BostonBali a PM but I get a mailbox full error. I'm not sure where I will be in relation to you guys at Narita. I can get into the RCC but that appears to be it on lounges.

BostonBali checking in!
I'm sorry, I did actually exceed the 250 inbox limit. Gotta get better about clearing my old mail...
I'll be happy to send the NW MR itinerary spreadsheet to anyone who PM's me. There will be about 25-30 (I forget the exact #) of us travelling through NRT at various times next week.
I will be out of town over the weekend, so I won't be able to send the spreadsheet until Sunday... :(
Thanks,
BostonBali

I got a copy of the spreadsheet, courtesy OnAMileHigh. (If you update it again, please send me the new one too. I've sent you a PM with the address.)

I will be in NRT for a short time (16:30 - 17:55) on the 2nd when there will be quite a few folks in the WC, including OnAMileHigh. If the lounge is nearby and somebody can come collect me so I get in the door, I'd love to stop in for a visit. I really have no idea how practical this is or how to arrange the timing. (United has been scheduling with a lot of slop lately so I wouldn't be surprised if I'm there early.) I'll be pretty tired by then but in need of a pre-boarding beverage. (My goal is to sleep gate-to-gate NRT-SIN but this requires drugs.)

Unfortunately the deal with the RCC is that as *G I can bring a guest but only one with a Star Alliance ticket.

So, I was thinking...

Maybe Akira and I can meet you for an outing? If things are indeed open all night, I get some time to roam around on my own and then we head out for food. What time is your flight back?

Akira Apr 24, 2005 9:13 pm

Good idea about meeting up for food Feorlen. I am up for it. I was also thinking maybe we can all split a cab down to town and back. Tell me what you guys think.

I saw OnAMileHigh comment on his flights elsewhere and he's got a much shorter stay than we do. Maybe he will stop by this thread to comment on if he's interested.

I did some looking around and I think I want some more info on what to expect to make sure I've got enough cash. (50% late night surcharge on taxis from what I'm reading.) I have limited funds for this adventure (about S$45 to play with.) Can anybody else comment? I suppose we should go ask over in the Singapore forum to see what people have to say.

Akira Apr 24, 2005 11:30 pm

Yeah Feorlen I think I read that post about OnAMileHigh staying in the terminal. I was wondering about the plan PremEx2000 recommended http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=424874 . I wonder how much the taxi ride is to the Lau Pa Sat food court? I am also trying not to spend much money, but it would be fun to go into town and check out some things over the 7 hours. I found some more flyertalkers coming in...da1dan and 168. Maybe they can come with us to help with the costs.

The Singapore forum folks think it would be about S$25 each way. Let's not make plans other than to meet up after arrival. Then we can see who wants to do what and how many we are. It's sounding like food will be be a viable option until about 4am. I will see if can get the return boarding pass in NRT in advance to make things easier.

Yep. My stay will be much shorter. NW 5 arrives at 1:20 AM (and has been arriving 20-40 mins. late over the past week or so) and NW 6 departs at 6:05 AM. NW 6 usually starts to board around 5:15 AM. It looks like I will only have about 3-4 hours to kill in SIN before I have to get back on the plane so I will be staying airside in the terminal. Not that that is a bad thing as there is plenty to do at Changi, even in the middle of the night.

Feorlen, I would be happy to bring you in as my guest. The NW and UA gates are not all that far from each other. I am not sure how to work out the logistics of connecting with you as you will have to go through security when you get off of your arriving flight. Perhaps I can leave a message at the WC club reception desk to be on the look out for you.

Do you mean regular passport control, or something else? With such a short stay I want to make sure I can get to my next gate on time. I could come over to the WC and hopefully we can work this out.

I still have to see about getting my return boarding pass while I'm in NRT, too. What have I gotten myself into? :)

No. Not Passport Control but security screening such as WTMD and x-raying of hand luggage. This can take a while if you arrive when other incoming flights are being processed as the lines get kind of long.

OnAMileHigh

Yes, once you get off the plane (and into the terminal if you come into a bus gate) as you follow the connections signage, you'll have to go through another security screening as mentioned above. Nothing major, but I"ve been able to run right through it with nobody in front of us, and I've had it take nearly an hour to clear depending on how many are still waiting from the flight before yours.

I'm not sure where the WorldClub is located at NRT, but if it helps y'all in coordinating, the RCC is next to gate 31.

Enjoy your time in SIN, I love it there and looking forward to getting back for a night at the end of May. As others have mentioned, definitely head out for some local food at one of the hawker centres such as Lau Pa Sat or Newton. :)

Me too!!!! I'm trying to head back over in August, possibly weekend of 13th or 20th.

Mmmmm, love BreadTalk! And if Gaz is in town, watch out because he'll try to talk you into eating durian-anything if they're still in season  Eat some cereal prawns for me, please!

Ewww. Well, at least I know in advance. It could end up being a tight connection after all.

yogi Apr 27, 2005 3:48 am

Not sure it will matter to those of you doing the 7 hour stay, but Monday May 2nd is a public holiday in Singapore (Labor Day). Part of a 3 day weekend as the official Labor Day falls on May 1st.

I'll be on your same flights heading back on 5/3. My travel is SIN-(NRT)-SFO-DEN-MSP. If you want in the RCC at NRT let me know. I'll be taking a shower there as it is so deliciously refreshing. Boom!

168 checking in here. Rookie FT, just read Feorlen's post and found this Community post. I will be on your UA837 from NRT and 838 to SFO the next day. If holiday is not an issue, count me in if you do PremEx2000's suggestion.

Well then, I'll be sure to hurry up to get in the shower queue before you! (I'll be doing that if I don't manage to in SIN.) Thank you for the offer, but I'm ok there. I wouldn't have been nearly so quick to do this if I weren't getting that 100% mileage bonus... :)

Feorlen,

If I score an Op-Up, I will be the only passenger with his own 6 pack of diet Coke for the flight. Otherwise I will be sitting in 46A on UA837 to SIN. Pls let me know if you guys do go into town.

My taxi fare from the airport to Little India on Feb. 4th was S21.15. I would be glad to join your trip into town. I will be in the RCC at NRT between flights. The flight that 168 and I are on from SEA arrives at 2:55PM so we will be there a little before the rest of you. It looks like several of us will be on the same flights from NRT-SIN, and even more on SIN-NRT-SFO.

Just found this thread... I'll be at SIN airport on May 2nd from about 6-9pm... if anybody else is there and wants to meet, send me a PM.

yogi May 1, 2005 6:20 pm

Hey all, I'm in singapore now (trying to make the most of the run, I brought a server with me to install at a datacenter here, no duty for hand carried gear....). Found a nice late night theatre off Orchard Place with a 3:40 showing of "The interpreter", an all night outdoor cafe, and a tea leaf and coffee bean with the wireless on all night. Maxis is the local hotspot provider, but you can use t-mobile hotspot accounts here.

See you all at the airport tuesday morning 3/3.

Feorlen May 2, 2005 10:02 am

We never did arrange a place to meet...

I'm hanging out at the internet terminals, by the info desk before immigration in terminal 1

btw, fat chick, blue dress. I'll be wandering around.
