Meeting Freddie Jr. repeatedly over the years, I could not help but notice how he has gained size. From a humble statue in a small bag, to his hown small briefcase filled with souvenirs, and now to his own full-size backpack. While bringing back great memories, all the extras make Freddie Jr. less and less handy to travel with - which is the key idea, right?

How about putting Freddie Jr. on a diet for a while, or maybe giving him a bit of storage space for his carry-on baggage at the House of Miles?

I think that's a very good idea. I remember getting a naked Freddie, and perhaps was the first to give him a little South African amenity kit to keep him a bit cleaner as he traveled. It was very simple to slip him inside my carryon.

I second that idea.

And this is not longer possible. Traveling with a trolley and a laptop in Economy means nowadays on the most airlines you have to check your carry on if you have an additional bag. Getting Freddy in your carry on is not longer possible, due to the seize and "Freddies belongings".

And some of us sit more frequently in Economy where a trolley and a laptop bag is not a problem, but a trolley, laptop bag and backpack with Freddie is a problem.

If Freddie would become handy again, I think this might be an advantage for everybody, who offers to bring him from one place to the other.

Yes, when I first met Freddie, he was a svelte youngster with people fighting to next take charge of him. On this meeting, I see that he has grown into a middle-aged version at least 4x the size of his old self :p with corresponding outright refusals to take him on! In fact, I’m already having a hard time arranging future hand-offs due to his current size...

If he is still in SFO, I could offer to take him to St. Malo via LHR and a cross-channel ferry - but all these remarks about his size and weight make me wonder if that's practical.

After slacking off for a few weeks, I've now updated Freddie's flight map with his recent travels up to PHL. It's really starting to fill out nicely! :)

If someone recalls earlier travels with Freddie that they'd like to see added to the map, please don't hesitate to drop me a PM.

Freddie Jr is now in the possession of boxo who will be bringing him to MSP for the farewell to NW Do.

boxo Sep 30, 2009 3:20 pm

Due to fog, Freddie Jr had to take a taxi MRY-SFO on 25 Sep, then flew SFO-MSP to say "goodbye" to Northwest Worldperks. On 28 Sep, he flew MSP-DEN-MRY. All in F. Nothing but the best for Freddie Jr. :D (Alex, I'll PM flight itin details. Glad to add MRY to the map.)

He will be part of the Flyertalk United Fleet Week Plane Pull Team on 11 Oct, then will find his way toward *A MegaDO.

PM received and flights added!

I was thinking, now that the Freddie Awards have been discontinued, might it be time to grant Freddie Jr. a suitable retirement at the House of Miles?

I had planned to order a Flight Memory poster to give to Randy as a thank-you at next year's Freddies - on the 10th anniversary of him giving Freddie Jr. to the members of FlyerTalk - but it appears that that awards show will not take place. I still plan to order the poster, and will send it to Randy anyway, but now I also envision Freddie resting in a display case at HoM in the middle of the numerous souvenirs he has picked up during his travels, under a poster of where he's been - a monument to the FlyerTalk community.

What do you guys and gals think?

No, Freddie is too young to rest on his laurels.

scoow Sep 30, 2009 7:42 pm

I think the map and "display" is a great idea... as long as it doesn't include Freddie Jr. I wouldn't mind his shedding some weight if HOM could find a suitable storage spot for the souvenirs he has picked up over the years. But I think Freddie Jr, like the FTers he was given to, would like to keep travelling, seeing more of the world and meeting FTers everywhere he goes.

Now he travels in style in a spotted *A lunch pail (or whatever it is) that someone picked up at the DO in Zurich.

He's kind of like my wife -- needs to be encouraged to travel with less luggage!

Am bumping this up cuz it might be nice to have Freddie at the StarMegaDo in November, and we need to coordinate getting it to an FTer who will be there. Given there are 200 FTers attending, we should be able to work it out, right?

Cheers.

I am sitting here with oliver2002 and we were just wondering the same. Where is Freddie Jr. now and how can he make his way preferably to ORD to join the party right from the start?

Just noticed this. So we need to compare the Fleet Week Do roster w/ the *MegaDo roster to figure out who's bringing him or doing the hand-off.

BTW - I think I have the record for the shortest hand-off of FJr. I picked it up at LAX & it turns out another FTer was departing LAX 30 minutes later & would be attending another Do, so I had FJr less than 1/2 hour.

Cheers.

As Sharon correctly found, Freddie Jr. is currently with boxo, who unfortunately will not make it to the Star Mega DO, but will be at the Fleet Week event. That's going to be the best (easiest) place for the next handoff.
