LAX (again!) 6/4 - 6/5
Flyertalker danam and I will be arriving on Friday 6/4 at 4:13PM and leaving Sat. 6/5 at 7:00PM. Anyone interested in meeting for drinks/dinner on 6/4 or lunch 6/5?
|
I may be around; touch base as it gets closer. Also, do you have transportation or doing the shuttle thing? My car's been going in/out of shop, so even if I am around might not have wheels but if you get over to MB, could meet up w/ you if I am in town. Cheers.

I'm going to just miss you....flying in Saturday evening at 7:00

Might rent a car but either way (shuttle or car) we can certainly make it over to MB if you're around. |
Manhattan Beach or Hermosa Beach would be great
I still don't know what is going on yet for sure. There will probably be a Laker game one of those days so....
If we do have it in MB or HB someone can probably pick you up |
I'm actually flying into into LAX 6/5 around 10:30, then driving down to a dinner meeting at the Hyatt Huntingon Beach-- so if anyone wants to meet up in MB (and can give me directions), I'll try to make it
|
I'll be around as well
If you guys find something to do, somewhere to meet.. I'd love to join ya in the south bay

That said, we can probably make it. |
Was downtown MB today & noticed sign - AVP Tournament (Professional Volleyball) is happening 6/4-6/6 at the MB Pier. If you haven't been before it's fun.
Having said that, wouldn't pick it as a place for a get-together, especially since no booze on the beach ;) Post next week & let's try to sort out if it's drinks/dinner on the 4th or lunch on the 5th. Cheers. |
Is this thing on for Friday?
Just checking to see if this is a go or no go?
|
I PM'd DEK to find out
I sent DEK a PM & asked him to post here what's going on. My guess is he was traveling over the weekend.
|
Sorry everyone, it was a busy weekend!
How about meeting up in Manhattan Beach either Friday evening around 6:30-7:00PM or Sat. around noon? As for a venue may I leave that to the locals as I don't know the area? Thanks! Dale. |
Sat Pref Here
Saturday preference here (noon works for me) but will go to whatever you guys choose, just post here please so I know where and when as I read this on the fly during the day
|
I can do either Fri or Sat. Just let me know.
Couple of things (not in any order): * noticed mauld's arriving on sat am, & s/he said s/he could swing by on way to huntington, so maybe that might be better so s/he can join in. * if the beach is like this past weekend (especially w/ the AVP this upcoming weekend), parking will be a zoo. there is valet parking (although it can get pricey), and in addition to the big parking structure behind the main section of mb blvd in dwntwn mb, there is now a new underground parking structure at the corner of valley & mb (entrance from valley headed south). parking structures require quarters, dimes & nickels. * for those interested, they can walk down to the pier after lunch & catch a bit of the volleyball tournament. Having said all that, both Fri eve & Sat lunch work for me. I'll just check the thread. Possible places to meet: Shark's Cove, Hennessy's, The Kettle, Shellfish Tavern, Beaches (downstairs). |
Since it looks like the best time and day for everyone let's choose Sat. at noon.
SkiAdcock , would you mind picking the place? Any of the one's you mentioned sound good to me. Thank you for helping with this! |
Shark's Cove - Noon Saturday
Ok, Shark's Cove it is for noon Saturday. For those who are familiar with MB, it's in the center of town on Manhattan Beach Blvd next to Hennessy's & The Kettle. I'll call over & get an address or website. This is a new sports bar in town, and I've gone there w/ auh2o, wingless & thezipper before on dif occasions (used to be Manhattan Coolers).
I'm trying to get some info on Shellback Tavern, but can't remember if that's the other place I'm thinking of or it's one next to it (there's 2-3 places closer to the pier & they all run together in my mind), so decided to go w/ Shark's Cove. Anyone needs directions and parking info, email me at [email protected] & put FT in the subject line. Also, I don't know if they take reservations but in case they do, post here yes or no so I have a head count. Cheers. |
I'll be there!
|
Sounds good
See you at the Sharks Cove MB on Sat at Noon
|
Me too!
Thanks again SkiAdcock ! |
Assuming no delay on my flight in from EWR, I'll be there! :D
|
oh cool
Awesome, I finally get to meet Mauld

Smarty Jones
Ok, we either have to eat/drink fast so I can get home in time to watch Smarty Jones (hopefully) take the Triple Crown, or we have to stay long enough that I can watch it on the multiple screens there :)
Here's the address & phone: Shark's Cove, 309 Manhatn Bch Blvd, Manhattan Beach, CA 90266, 310-545-2683 |
I've never been to Manhattan Beach!
I'm embarrassed to admit that after almost 13 years of living in LA, I've never been to Manhattan Beach. If a FT lunch can't get me there, I don't know what can! Please add me to the list of attendees.
|
I assume (most likely very presumptously of me) that the FT group will be found at the bar????

I think you assume correctly! ;) I'll make sure to bring my FT luggage tag with me and put it somewhere on my person so that it will be easily seen, for those of us who have never met. |
I will be there!
Just finished organizing my schedule on Sat. I will be there.
Have to go up to Beverly Hills in the morning, but I should be able to come back by noon! |

Attending:
SkiAdcock DEK danam Mauld TrojanHorse Flyman SS255 auh2o wingless Possible: dhammer53 Just talked to the restaurant. They don't take reservations, so I'll put our name in for a table (Flyertalk) when I get there. I'd say meet at the bar & then move to a table when it's available. The bar only has 9 seats & odds are a couple other folk might already be there, so we can't just eat at the bar. Again, a reminder. With the AVP in town (not to mention it just being a normal SoCal day at the beach), Shark's Cove will be busy at lunchtime. Oh drat - we have to drink more? ;) But because of the AVP, parking will be a zoo. Best bet is either the 2-story parking structure behind the restaurant or the new underground parking structure at corner of Valley & Manhattan Beach Blvd (entrance on Valley coming south from 13th St). Bring quarters. After drinks, meal & hopefully Smarty Jones winning :), folk can wander down Manhattan Beach Blvd to the pier to watch part of the volleyball action if they so desire. Cheers. See you Sat - and may be the weather be as nice then as it is today. PS - For those from out east who have not been out in the sun, bring some sunscreen if you plan on watching the vball tourney. Doesn't take long to get a sunburn if you're not used to sun. |

I may be able to make this if I can get my act together early in the day. If I do show up, how do I get there, please. Usually to get to Pancho's, Sharon's etc. I just take the 405 to the 105 til it ends, then I just keep going straight and make a left at the ocean, like where that road ends. Is the pier area and this place just a little farther down than Panchos? On that same road? |
Directions for lisamcgu
Lisa, if you make it up, take the 405N to the Inglewood exit. After exiting, turn right onto Inglewood & at the first light (think that's it, but there should be a street sign), make a right onto Manhattan Beach Blvd. Stay on MBB to downtown Manhattan Beach. If you drive into the volleyball nets on the beach, you've gone too far :D See above posts re: actual address & places to park. Cheers.
|
Shuttle
I'll be taking the free shuttle from Northrop Grumman (corner of Marine & Aviation) to avoid any parking (and driving :D hassles especially with a few beers in me LOL) hassles in MB
See you at noon'ish Edited to add that I'm running late (in OC now) but should be there no later than 1:00 p.m. |
I had a great time yesterday. It's always a pleasure to meet FT'ers from near & far. (And to discover new places in LA -- like Manhattan Beach!) Thanks for organizing, Sharon.
P.S. I didn't get ticketed for parking 3 hours at a 2-hour meter. |
Great seeing everyone!
It was great seeing everyone & we had them arriving/leaving in different waves throughout the day & evening.
Some just before the heartbreak of Smarty Jones losing in the last length & a half :( , some just before the NHL game started, and then kudos to the rest for staying 'til the end of the NHL game (well, they couldn't drag me out of there, although they tried ;) ) when TB scored in double-overtime :D And for those from out of town, wouldn't you know today is glorious & no June Gloom! |

Well if you'd said it was going to go into the evening, we might've shown up. Oh.... Re the June Gloom - it did look pretty nice out there this morning flying out, but then that was at 6:30 and after waking up at 4:30 in a hotel room with no hot water, anything that was going to get me closer to my home & a hot shower was looking wonderful! |
cawhite, had no idea it was going to go on as long as it did. next time...
|
I eventually did show up (at 4:30).
I even met a soon to be new Flyertalker. I suggested she use the handle LiveWire. :p My big disappointment was that I once again (third time), misconnected with mauld. I know she exists because I talked to her once on the phone at the Westin in LAS. Nice seeing everyone again (twice in 1 week) :p ;) :o :D |
So...
How long did you guys stay there, or did you change the venue afterwards? I just had so many errands to run in the afternoon (actually the whole day - being out-of-town weekdays every week...), and I had to leave at 2:30PM.
It was great meeting most of people for the first time (incl. some local southbay folks and overseas guest). Sharon, many thanks for organizing the mini "Do" in MB and the reminder through PM. Yes, the weather today is awesome here... ^ I was enjoying some cold white wine(s) by a swimming pool this afternoon. :) P.S.: I am looking forward to another FT get together at the October Fest event in Alpine Villege, or even sooner. :D |
Flyman, we were at Shark's Cove 'til 9 I think. Some of the others wanted to leave but I stubbornly insisted we stay 'til the end of the NHL game (go TB :) ), and plied them w/ drinks, at which point they said - OK! :D Then we went for pizza afterwards - what's the name of the place just up from Beaches? Anyway, there. Heck, I didn't even know they had tables. I thought you just got the pizza at the window!
|
It was great meeting you all on Sat. afternoon, I had alot of fun! It was too bad we had to leave when we did.
Snagged a row to myself (as did danam ) and slept most of the way back to BOS on the SFO-BOS leg, however I am still very tired today for some reason, maybe getting too old for this? ;) Thanks again Sharon for organizing! Hope to see some of you in October! |
I too want to add my thanks to Sharon for organizing this mini get together!
I wish I could have stayed a bit longer, but as my trip was being paid for by my company, I had to give them at least some of my time ;) Here are a few pics of the group:http://www.ofoto.com/I.jsp?c=xcyf847...&x=0&y=-w3v5nq PS-- Dan, perhaps another time, another place~~~~ Michele |
I am sorry I didn't get to spend more time talking to a few of you. Sharks Cove was so loud that the only one you could talk to was someone sitting next to you.
I had a good time and I was one of those ready to go but I stayed. I hadn't planned on sitting in a bar from noon to 9pm but Sharon HAD ;) to watch the NHL game and it went into OT. I love hockey but with Tampa and Calgary I really didn't care about other than I believe the Stanley Cup belongs with the Canadians before the Floridians. [rant over] Sharon the pizza place is Manhattan Pizzaria. I don't like pizza except the pizza there. I am told it is about as close to NY style pizza as you can get in the westside (coast). |
