I booked in the 18th, out the 21st...you might try those dates? I just happened to go back in and look yesterday and found it. I just now input the 18-21 and 18-22 and it came out with the $185/night rate.

I was originally planning on using my spg50s at the Westin, but would really like to stay at the St Regis depending on whether everyone is staying Bund v. Pudong, and how "out of the way" it would be

Thanks! I just got the St. Regis for $185/night from the 18th to the 21st. I can always check out early.

There is nothing interesting within walking distance of the St. Regis. There are loads of things within walking distance of the Westin. However, I like the St. Regis a lot more and the cost of a taxi is insignificant, especially considering how much less the St. Regis costs right now.

Glad you were able to find it! I made my res as a Gold, but will be PLT then...will have to get that changed before check-in! I have a feeling that staying at the St Regis will be similar to staying in the Financial District (NY) hotels during the weekend. But as you mention, taxis are relatively insignificant and "walking distance" is all relative!

Uh, no. In terms of nearby things to do, being at the Shanghai St. Regis is closer to being on the moon than to being in the NYC financial district on a weekend. I don't think one can walk to anything interesting because everything interesting is on the other side of a river that, to the best of my knowledge, is not bridged by any bridges that permit pedestrians.

i agree with the "on the moon" description, but feel obliged to point out that the fact that the hotel is nowhere near the river is much more relevant than the river itself. the lujiazui hotels, for example, are in pudong, but aren't THAT inconvenient -- it's a short jaunt across the river by taxi, subway, boat, or the bund tourist tunnel.

Excellent! A webpage similar to mjm's SIN-DO webpage would be helpful.

Westin vs St. Regis

Just my 2 cents worth. I have stayed at the Westin several times and have a small company here in Shanghai (actually Songjiang). My company does have an agreemnt with the Westin for reduced rates (210 USD)and if you all like I can see about a block of rooms to include club priviledges and insure all points will be awarded (some time corporate discounts will negate SPG points). Staying at the St. Regis will put you out of the way of most anything and depending on the time of day it can take 45 minutes just to cross the river due to traffic on both the Tunnel AND the bridges.
The Westin is 5 blocks walking distance to Nanjing Road (Pedestrian shopping street looks alot like HK at night. and three blocks from the Bund. 15 minutes taxi to Xintiandi and the Pirate Market, all must sees in Shanghai.
The St. Regis is a fine hotel, but certainly out of the way. No one would be dissapointed at the Westin, I dont care how discriminating your tastes.
I'm in Shanghai as I write this and will be till the end of the month.
Cheers,,,

during that time of year, i'm guessing it should be possible to get into the westin for under 150. for the sake of reference, the pudong shangri-la typically offers publicized specials in the 125 range during feb and march.

on a related but unrelated note, the *wood employee rate at the westin and st. regis is ~12.

kjpglobal and moondog, it looks as though we're going to be getting some great help from both of you. I'm thrilled that we've got people who live and/or work in Shanghai, giving us real on the ground help.

thanks for the thanks. for better or for worse, i'm actually "on the ground" in newport beach at present, but expect to make it back to that incredibly hot industrial swamp within the next 3 weeks. if you haven't already, you might want to check out related threads in the asia forum. there i have opined at length on a variety of topics including food, drink, sight-seeing, the maglev, and intra-china travel; just search for "shanghai."
