FT Running Do

Whilst out pounding the pavement tonight I had an idea for an FT Running DO. I noticed on other boards, that several members run on a regular basis. What do folks think of a group of FlyerTalkers getting together and doing a 10K, 1/2 Marathon or Marathon together? It can either be a carbo loading (aka beer) fun event, or something with a bit of fundraising to a worthwhile charity.

Obviously we would not want to set up our own race, so I suggest we go as a group into some other organisations race. In the spirit of FT it has to be someplace unique though.

Happy to help organise, if others think this is a good idea.

Happy Trails.

I am running the Bolder Boulder again this year...

Good idea... Does SIN have a marathon? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif

I'm running to the nearest all-you-can-eat buffet.

chexfan Sep 24, 2003 9:23 pm

I'd be interested in anything under a 13.1 miles.

Running 26.2 once was enough! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

I'm interested. I'm doing the Chicago Marathon on October 12. There are a few pretty exotic ones out there such as the Great Wall of China and the Antarctic marathons.

DEK Sep 25, 2003 6:48 am

How about the Marathon du Medoc et des Graves which is a race through the vineyards of the Bordeaux region in France. Many runners dress up in different crazy costumes, one can sample wine along the route, have dinner at a chateaux etc. I'm not a marathon runner but this has always interested me, sounds like a lot of fun.

This is a great idea! The Great Wall or other "exotic" would be incredibly fun.
I'll be interested right after I get back from through-hiking the Appalachian Trail http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif
<not joking...I'm off for seven months, starting March 18, 2004>

My roommate thru-hiked the PCT in 2001. Finished in Sept, then ran the Portland Marathon w/o training 4 weeks later. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/eek.gif

While I can't make the Running Do, please feel free to include me in the next Drinking Do.

My father always told me I should play to my strengths.

I'd love to do Great Wall of China Half...was seriously thinking about doing it in a few years (great way to celebrate turning 40?) and a couple of my virtual training buddies have done the Antarctic Marathon, although due to WX, they had to do it by running around the deck of the ship!

For a shorter race, the BridgeRun (10K in April) in CHS is fun although extremely crowded. Or Shamrock Shuffle in Cgo in March (8k)?

Assuming I DNS, I'm doing Disney in January (I did the half last year).

Efrem Sep 25, 2003 12:34 pm

I love the idea. I'm game as long as it fits into my teaching schedule. I'd opt for half-M or less, not competitive - there are enough competitive outlets around already and I personally prefer to choose my races for reasons other than FT participation. (I've run eight marathons, but the last was in 1987 and I doubt I'll get into shape for another.)

Wow. Any chance we could get a trip report ? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

I think this is a great idea. I am shooting for San Diego and Big Sur next year with the odd 50K and Ironman triathlon thrown in.

It looks like we have some great ideas. Unfortunately I am pretty much tied up and travelling until the 7th so can't narrow down a race or ideas until after then.

The idea of a relay crossed my mind - baring that I vote for a non-North America destination - adds to the FT flavour.

TravelManKen Sep 27, 2003 9:54 am

I like this idea too. Maybe we should look at a 10k (6.2 miles for you non-metric folks) run so that more people can participate. This would allow non-runners or those that have run long ago to get into running condition fast and then participate.

chalf Sep 27, 2003 10:28 am

Great idea, as long as I can earn on AA en route from LON. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Or to really frustrate the FlyerTalk community, it could be somewhere served by an airline that partners with none of the major allianeces....

AtlanticBeach Sep 27, 2003 11:48 am

An excellent idea!

May I humbly suggest a 5 to 10 mile race so that the more casual runners can participate. Although Bay to Breakers would be great, anything more than 10K participants could be difficult from an in-race logistic standpoint (starting and staying together, as well as finding people at the finish).

Usually early February is the Gasparilla 15K in TPA and the Gate River Run 15K is in JAX on the second Saturday in March. Both have about 8,000 runners. Since we spend so much time in the air, is there a 10K/15K near the House of Miles?

Started 5 Bostons- only finished 4. That darned broken leg wouldn't go more than 17 miles.

Wuss. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

Seriously, a running DO sounds like a lot of fun. A lot of big-city marathons also feature a 1/2-thon and/or shorter races. Or...we all head to the 2004 Run For The Seals in the Marin Headleads. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

I'm running the Twin Cities Marathon this weekend...

That was my thought as I read through the posts prior to yours.

By the way, the Twin Cities Marathon was AWESOME. Perfect weather, beautiful course, and HUGE crowd support. That town throws a great marathon! I'd recommend it for any gathering you might have in mind, and they even have a 10-miler for you speed demon sprinter-types. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

I enjoyed Minnie so much, I'm even thinking about going back for Grandma's (Duluth) in '04.

Well as one who just came from my first DO, I am not a huge fan of going to another one, or arranging one. If there is a run arranged that I can take part in, I would probably do it, but given the past weekend I honestly don't think I would go out of my for an event again. Too little vacation time.

I've never been to an FT Do, so out of morbid curiousity I'll ask what was wrong with the one you went to...

*bump*

I just got confirmation that my entry for Grandma's 2005 (June 18th, Duluth) has been accepted. Anybody else here running it? They accept about 9,000 entries: odds are, I'm not the only FT'er running it! :)

Still up in the air as to what my fall race will be. Last year I did Flying Pig in May (Cincy) and then a bunch of 1/2's in the fall. This year, I think I want to do a fall full 'thon.

Snoopyo Feb 1, 2005 6:30 pm

Well I was in HNL in mid-Dec when the HNL marathon was on, looked interesting but the early start is a bit rough. Could not even get up to watch it ;)

They do that one early to get most of the runners across the finish line in cool weather. That race is very popular among charity and recreational runners (the 4-5 hour crowd) so they kind of have to do it early, or else they'd have way too much work for the medical staff.

I guess if you fly in 1 or 2 days before the race and keep your body somewhat on your home time zone, it wouldn't be too bad.

We always used Hawaiian jetlag to our advantage. Day 1 - drive up Haleakala (sp?) at 5AM to catch sunrise. Day 2 - Road to Hana - get going early and you can take frequent hike-breaks or swim-breaks and still stay ahead of the bus tours. Day 3 - Early morning long run south of Wailea. By Day 4, you can kinda sleep in till 8AM or so... :)

From this point of view the Hong Kong Marathon would be a possible Event for a Running DO. This year, it on February 27th, so a little bit late for planning a Running DO. The HK marathon has distance of 10, 21,1 and 42,195 km, so it might be interesting for the short and the long distande runners.

By the way, I read in ths thread, there was a question of a Marathon in Singapore. The Singapore Marathon takes place in Decmeber, but as far as I know only full distance of 42,195 km.

pinniped Feb 3, 2005 7:48 am

No way I'm ready to race in 3 weeks! :o

Singapore could be interesting...

I'm also liking that Medoc Marathon suggestion from a prior post. Running + Food + Wine = ^ Mix in a few days in the French countryside - that does not suck.

In Medoc, they give you something like seven hours to finish it. So clearly a lot of the emphasis is on sampling local products along the way. :D It's not like you have to be something silly like a "marathon runner" to enter that one.

FLYGVA Feb 3, 2005 8:59 am

Friends of mine participated a few years ago at this event and told it is more an event than a marathon.

It on September 10th this year And you are right, it is a nice countryside.

Bolder Boulder again this year. 30 May 2005 (Memorial Day)

Anyone here running Grandma's?

Anyone planning a fall race somewhere interesting? Trying to come up with something more creative than NYC or Chicago... Maybe the Bizz Johnson Trail Marathon...

pinniped Apr 13, 2005 3:51 pm

White Rock - Dec 11

About an hour ago, a couple of us guys that run together figured out that the Chiefs are playing at Dallas on the afternoon of the White Rock Marathon. That's like a sign from God that we need to get down there, run Dallas, and then go tailgate and catch a Chiefs game.

So there's my late-fall marathon, which I'd probably run with no goal time in mind... Still would consider an early October one...

pinniped Apr 20, 2005 1:57 pm

Here's my likely race calendar for the next few months:

May 21st - Olathe Marathon (I'm running the 15k)
June 6th - Hospital Hill 1/2 Marathon (KC)
June 18th - Grandma's Marathon (Duluth)
Sept 24th - Kansas City Marathon (I'm running the half)
Oct 2nd - Army Ten Miler (plus a Nats-Phils game and Terps football game)
Oct 9th - Chicago Marathon (still tentative on this one...just seems like I have a built-in taper for it)
Mid-November - Gobbler Grind 1/2 Marathon
Dec 11th - White Rock, Dallas, followed by the Chiefs-Cowboys game

If any FTers are doing any of these, PM me...

MapleLeaf Apr 20, 2005 4:29 pm

I want to fly to France and do the Medoc Marathon. After all my EUG runs, I will only have 250,000 miles in my BD account, is that enough to get there from YYZ? ;)

Medoc '06 is on my list. I barely missed the cutoff for '05...

hmmmm...France in '06, definitely something to consider if I can get my gimpy leg fixed by then ;) I definitely want to go back to France after a few awesome days in Paris!!
