I arrive at 11:50 p.m. 3/21 in SIN (same flight as koko's) and have an open return. Thinking about taking a coupla of days in TPE before heading home ...

Convenient in terms of what?

I've always found this to be a most absurd argument.

Lissen folks, why not stay at a hotel with top-of-the-line amenities and exceptional service over a propertry with okay rooms close to, uh, "good" shopping? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/confused.gif

Cabs are CHEAP in SIN -- like SD$4-8 to go from the CBD to Orchard Road (which I think is overrated as a shopping mecca).

Unless walking is a huge issue, I say stay at the property that gives you the most service-bang for the buck. So what if you can't stagger to the nearest air-conditioned mall on Orchard Rd.?

\m still debating between the Hilton and the Conrad. Conrad is nicer as a hotel, but the Hilton is much more convenient.

Well, I do enjoy walking around. I've walked the equivalent of 3-4 tube stations in London instead of taking the Underground. I like getting the feel of the city on the ground, not in a cab buzzing around.

The attraction of the Conrad is diminished significantly by the fact that they no longer offer Executive Lounge access for HHonor Gold's. No such report from the Hilton.

In addition, the rate I got for the Hilton is ~20 SGD less per night than the Conrad.

All things factored in, I'd be fine at the Hilton, but I'll be happy to meet up at the Conrad for a drink with you and/or kokonutz. In fact, I'm coming in the same night [3/21] on JAL.

Hmmm...the climate conditions in SIN are a bit different above ground than LHR...3-4 MRT stations walk in SIN wouldnt be for me, I'd be looking for that A/C Comfort Cab.

It's been a looong winter here in Boston. I'll be looking forward to the heat.

"New policy - gold upgrade now only ONE class eg to new "business" level which includes free breakfast and SG$10 laundry credit but NO EXECUTIVE LOUNGE access

Had a few discussions with staff while I was there and this is a major problem for me - but what is worse I was told to book "business" then I would be upgraded to exec - but there is no such listing on their website (at least for the next few months). While they certainly can charge "what the market will bear" it would have been nice to have notification (although a ONE time exception was made because I have stayed many times and did not know this or would have booked elsewhere)."

Plato: Solution: be a Diamond http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif. I'll be glad to bring you to the Lounge as my guest http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif!!!!!

Better than hassle the Conrad (where we stayed Nov 2001 with lounge access), get Marriott on Orchard for $56 on Priceline. We were just there and it is quite a nice hotel. Easy walking to all sorts of restaurants, etc. If you don't get lounge, McDonald's is almost next door as well as across the street! Though the lounge was really nice - we peeked! Elegant hors d'oeuvres, both hot and cold, and lovely little desserts.
